The XVL Diabetes Week will focus this year on women (08/11/2017)

As every year, the XVL Diabetes Week in Cartagena is made to mark the celebration of World Diabetes Day, November 14.

The training and information activities on this disease are organized by the Diabetes Society of Cartagena and Region, SODICAR, in collaboration with the City of Cartagena (from November 13 to 19).

This year, the motto of the FID (International Diabetes Federation) 2017 pays special attention to the problems of diabetes in women, under the theme: 'Diabetes and women: our right to a healthy future'.

The conference was presented at a press conference on Wednesday by the councilor of Social Services and Social Media delegate, Carmen Martín, who has expressed with her words the importance of this theme, "we want to highlight the important role of women, who normally they usually take on the role of caretakers of children, parents, husbands and family members ".

Many women are key in the health care of others, but sometimes it is difficult for them to take care of themselves.

Therefore, the importance of informing women about adequate nutrition, regular exercise and the correct intake of medication for optimal control.

The mayor has also claimed that we must work fully to create a social awareness and a broad knowledge in society about the disease.

In the sense has also declared the president of SODICAR, M. Dolores Garcia, "we want to give visibility to diabetes since in Spain we are almost 14 percent of the population that have diabetes, which in Cartagena represents about 30,000 people affected , of which 6 percent do not know it ".

The programming of these activities has among its fundamental purposes the formation and information of the disease, many of the activities are framed in this regard, include the 'Campaign of information and early detection of diabetes', on Thursday November 16, in the Juan XXIII square, and the 17th will be held in the HGU External Consultation Hall of the Santa Lucía hospital, which will be done free of charge.

Retinography will also be done at no cost.

To end the councilor of Quality of Life Area, Francisco Calderón, wanted to encourage people to participate in the 'March united by diabetes', on November 14, a charity race of 2 km., Which starts in the Consistorial Palace.

"In addition, the Town Hall and the Regional Assembly will be illuminated in blue to raise awareness about diabetes."
