Agrifood companies improve their image using web tools, according to a thesis of the UPCT (16/10/2017)

Having a website, using social networks and tools such as 'cloud computing' and e-commerce improves the image and results of agro-food companies, as perceived by their own people.

About half of the companies in this sector in Spain apply some of these techniques, according to the survey conducted during the thesis of the new doctor by the Universidad Politécnica de Cartagena (UPCT) Erasmo Isidro López Becerra.

The thesis, which has had the answers of 219 managers or managers of agri-food companies, has confirmed the generational gap in the use of ICT, since "the adoption and intensity of use of these tools depends, to a greater extent, on variables such as the age of those responsible for decision-making, "explains López Becerra.

According to the Mexican researcher, the correct implementation of ICT must be preceded by a change of mentality and organization.

Respondents are inclined to think that using web tools improves the image of their company, increases the satisfaction of their customers and suppliers, increases their competitiveness, productivity, profitability and results, as well as the satisfaction of their staff and partners.

This perception is especially high in relation to the image of the company.

"Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) favor proximity and interactivity in the internal and external processes of companies and the improvement of relations with their different interest groups," argue the thesis directors, Narciso Arcas Lario and Francisco Alcón Provencio.

"The development of new forms of organization and communication and the ability to manage large volumes of information, which foster ICT, generates competitive advantages related to cost reduction, development of new products and services, access to new markets and, in general, improves business results, "they add.

Among the respondents, women are a minority (only 27%, symptom of the gender gap in business positions) and 66% have university studies.

Most of the companies that answered the questionnaire online are cooperatives (48%) and small companies (40%) predominate, compared to microenterprises (32%) and medium-sized firms (21%).

The research, carried out under the PhD program in Business Administration and Management of the UPCT, has been part of the training and research activities developed by the Cajamar Chair of Agri-food Cooperativism Universidad Politécnica de Cartagena to bring the knowledge generated in the university environment to all agents of the agri-food sector.
