TO DISCLOSE THE HISTORIC PAST OF THE CITY

The Councilor for Archaeological Heritage has stressed that this event serves to "offer citizens the opportunity to know and participate in their material and immaterial heritage."

"It is an honor that Cartagena hosts this congress that helps us to put in value our urban and cultural heritage and bring the population a historical past that we are frankly proud of," said Ricardo Segado.

In the same line has been expressed David Martinez.

"We are delighted to be able to hold this congress here in Cartagena," said the mayor of Culture, who also stressed the will of the City Council "to work to ensure that this legacy is investigated and disseminated, passing it on to the generations of today and future as a very valuable heritage that must be known, cared for and enhanced. "

For his colleague Ricardo Segado "it makes perfect sense" to hold this meeting in the port city, since the S. XVIII was crucial in the urban transformation of Cartagena, which became one of the first illustrated cities in Spain, as commented .

THE ILLUSTRATED CARTGENE

The importance of Cartagena during the S. XVIII can still be recognized in the streets and constructions, with the urban layout and buildings as representative and emblematic as hospitals, barracks, Artillery Park, forts and batteries of coast that surround the city in addition of the Wall of the Sea and the Arsenal, that supposed an unprecedented engineering work with the application of the latest technical and architectural innovations.

The decisive influence of the Enlightenment in the port city was also reflected in the daily life of its citizens so that the stamp of the S XVIII is projected to this day and profoundly influences the current Cartagena, the S. XXI, which shows the decisive inheritance and imprint of several events that have origin in this century as the ascent to the Spanish throne of the Bourbons, with the kings Philip V and his son Carlos III, who were determinants in the future of the port city and placed in the first political, military and social level with the creation of a Royal Navy and its powerful military base, thus making Cartagena the capital of the Maritime Department of the Levant and with the reform of the city that included the transformation of the urban fabric.
