UPCT prepares odor recognition workshops with aromatic plants for Alzheimer's patients (13/09/2017)

The Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) and the Association of Relatives and Friends of Alzheimer's Disease and other neurodegenerative diseases (AZAL) of Cartagena and region have today signed a collaboration agreement by which the School of Agronomists will maintain in its Experimental Station Agroalimentaria Tomás Ferro a collection of aromatic plants to perform odor recognition workshops with people with these conditions.

"We are delighted to exercise social responsibility with the associations around us and we hope it will serve a lot," said the rector, Alejandro Díaz.

"This agreement helps us improve the quality of life of our users, through a therapy that combines social, physical and intellectual activity, and overturn the taboo that continues to exist with people suffering from some kind of dementia," said Raúl Nieto, manager of AFAL.

The agreement also provides for the transfer of leisure gardens, also on the grounds of the Polytechnic in La Palma, to be cultivated by users of the association, recalling agricultural experiences and sharing this social and environmental activity with their families.

"The most interesting thing is that they are the ones who take care of the products and collect them," says the manager of an association with 222 partners.

Already this spring, about twenty AFAL users planted tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, radishes, aubergines, beans, spinach and piquillo peppers in 320 square meters within the grounds intended for leisure gardens cultivated by students of the University of Seniors of the Polytechnic.

"Contact with the field is a way for many of them to remember past experiences," says Station Director Eva Armero.

"It is an activity that motivates them a lot, allowing them to get out of their daily routine and feel integrated in society," he adds.

The Polytechnic of Cartagena has previously collaborated with AFAL donating the profits of the sale of its wine Tomás Ferro and through work practices of its students in the offices of the association.
