The strategy involves boosting the economic activity of the area and giving greater prominence to the esplanade of the port that, once completed the reform works, is a suitable place for the development of commercial and cultural initiatives that serve as a showcase both to spread the heritage as the local commerce, as well as to make known products and crafts of the whole Region.

"This is a strategic place for which we must bet to show the full potential of the Region, which can offer diverse services to both the citizen and the tourist," said the spokeswoman, who stressed "the great work that is is taking place from the Port Authority to attract more tourists each day, placing the region and, more specifically Cartagena, as an ideal destination for cruise passengers for its cultural, commercial and gastronomic offer.

In fact, the forecast for the Port of Cartagena in 2017 is a 25 percent increase in the number of cruise passengers, which goes from 180,000 to 230,000, and has been chosen by cruise passengers as one of the five best Western Mediterranean destinations in the 'Cruise Critic Cruisers' Choice Destination Awards'.

Arroyo said that in the most important tourism fairs in the world, the World Travel Market in London and the ITB in Berlin, the Region of Murcia will be present with this initiative.

"The most relevant project to be presented at these fairs is the Port of Cartagena," he said.
