The new pieces extracted from the wreck of "Las Mercedes" will be an international tourist claim for Cartagena (30/08/2017)

Arroyo valued "very positively" that the pieces extracted since 2015 are exposed in two years in the ARQUA, "placing Cartagena as one of the most important tourist references and recovery of the heritage

The regional government spokeswoman, Noelia Arroyo, today attended the presentation of the results of the third scientific expedition to the wreck Our Lady of Las Mercedes, which has ended with an unprecedented success at the world level by recovering two culebrinas (cannons) of the century XVI.

It is expected that all the recovered pieces, together with those extracted in the expeditions carried out in 2015 and 2016, will be incorporated within two years to the permanent exhibition of the National Museum of Underwater Archeology (ARQUA) in Cartagena.

"The most important thing for the Region of Murcia and for the city of Cartagena is that in Cartagena, in the National Museum of Underwater Archeology, we will be able to enjoy a permanent collection of this treasure of Our Lady of the Mercedes," said Arroyo.

"This will be a new milestone for the city of Cartagena and for the Region of Murcia as a reference for international tourism for its cultural heritage."

The expedition, organized by the Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport, in collaboration with the Spanish Council for Scientific Research (CSIC), the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO) -organisms under the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness- and the Navy Spanish, has allowed to recover the two cannons of 4 meters in length and more than 2 tons of weight each, to a record depth of 1,137 meters, and other pieces of exceptional documentary interest, like a bronze faucet, a perforated copper plate As a vent and three bronze pulleys with scraps of wood to be analyzed.

Arroyo highlighted the work of all the administrations in this expedition and pointed out that "among all we make more Spain brand, more brand Region of Murcia, and places Cartagena once again as one of the most important tourist references and heritage recovery. To that work of the administrations, the Cartagena, the Murcia and the whole world will be able to enjoy that great work ".

The archaeological campaign has fulfilled the objective of expanding the knowledge of the wreck, mainly of the state of conservation of the materials and their evolution;

Record the dispersion of the remains of the frigate, continue positioning all the archaeological remains and advance in the interpretation and analysis of the ship.

Work has already begun on cleaning, desalination, conservation and studies of the recovered remains.

The entire extraction operation of the pieces has been carried out according to the criterion of their singularity, as well as the information they can provide on the life on board the frigate.

In the case of the two culebrinas are expressly cited in the manifesto of the charge of the Mercedes frigate in the Archivo General de Indias (Seville).
