The Community will support the edition of a book on the origins of the Brotherhood of San Gines de la Jara (25/08/2017)

The regional government spokesman attended today the solemn mass and the subsequent procession in honor of the patron saint of Cartagena, a festival celebrating the 340th anniversary of his appointment

The minister of Transparency, Participation and spokesman of the regional government, Noelia Arroyo, attended today the solemn mass and later procession in honor to San Ginés de la Jara, that celebrates the 340 anniversary since being named patron of Cartagena.

The Brotherhood of San Ginés de la Jara, which organizes the acts of this onomastic, is currently making a book about the origin and history of its foundation, which some indications date back to 1567, and which will feature Support from the Community.

Arroyo, who was distinguished with the sister medal of this Brotherhood, said that "this year is very special for the Brotherhood, since one hundred years of its re-foundation are completed, the ten of its re-establishment and the 340 years since the saint of French origin was chosen patron of Cartagena, "an agreement of the Municipal Corporation dating from April 27, 1677.

The solemn Mass in honor of San Ginés is celebrated on the second day of these celebrations dedicated to the patron saint of Cartagena, followed by a procession with the image of the saint on the avenue Ingeniero de la Cierva.

On Saturday, the third and last day of celebrations, the pilgrimage will take place in honor of the saint, organized by the Brotherhood of Romeros de San Ginés de la Jara, and which will take place outside the Basilica of Charity.

A tradition that has its origins in the XIV century, when devotion and religious fervor for San Ginés resulted in numerous hermits being established in the vicinity of the monastery and the organization of popular pilgrimages.

Therefore, the Commission of Education and Culture of the Regional Assembly approved a proposal to promote the declaration of Intangible Cultural Interest of the Pilgrimage of San Ginés de la Jara.

Since the Brotherhood of Romeros de San Ginés de la Jara was established in 2008, "they have kept this beautiful tradition alive," said Arroyo, who said that the regional government is working to ensure that the pilgrimage "can reach a restored monastery, To recover the splendor of yesteryear and where the cult can be celebrated. "

In February 2017, the regional government also began proceedings to declare the head of San Ginés de la Jara Well of Cultural Interest with category of 'Historic Site'.

The objective is to guarantee the surroundings of the monastery, including the deposits of Victoria Cave, and Monte Miral, as well as three other Roman times, the Calzada del Beal, Petrica and Strait of San Ginés.
