The Mandarache Prize seeks to grow in Colombia (24/08/2017)

The Mandarache Prize is being held this week in Colombia to strengthen ties with the reading program for students 'Read The Caribbean' and study future ways of collaboration between both programs.

The invitation comes from the pilot action Orillas Mandarache, developed this last school year, through which sixty students from Cartagena de Indias (Colombia) and sixty students from Cartagena (Chile) participated as readers-jury of the Mandate 2017 Prize together To the 5,000 young readers of Cartagena (Spain) enrolled in the program.

The collaboration between Leer El Caribe and the Mandarache Prize was sponsored by Javier Cercas, winner of the 2014 Mandarache Prize, and Hay Festival Cartagena director, Cristina Fuentes, who put in contact the organizations of both educational programs, which he had as a happy Result the first edition of Orillas Mandarache.

The coordinator of the program at the City Council of Cartagena, Alberto Soler, has held technical meetings these days with Alberto Abello Vives, founder of the program Read the Caribbean and the Caribbean Observatory and current director of the Library Luis Ángel Arango (Colombia's largest library) ) in Bogota;

As well as with Jaime Bonet, the manager of the Bank of the Republic in Cartagena, the institution that has made the invitation to host this meeting and has financed the expenses of the meeting.

In addition to these meetings, Alberto Soler will give a Reading Education Workshop on August 24 and 25 at the Bartolomé Calvo Library in Cartagena de Indias.

The workshop is aimed at students, teachers and librarians who have participated in Orillas Mandarache.

As a colophon, and in order for students to live "a Mandarache encounter," the winner of the 2017 Mandarache Award Miguel Ángel Ortiz will hold a videoconference to meet the readers and answer their questions about his winning novel The immense minority (Literature Random House, 2014).
