Airbnb particularly affects low-cost hotels (07/06/2017)

The impact of the accommodation platform in private homes Airbnb is one of the topics addressed by the international congress on tourism that this week is hosting the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT).

Chinese researcher Luqi Lu has studied how the hotel industry is affecting this new phenomenon in tourist behavior and has found that 61% of those looking for accommodation in the United Kingdom compare the prices of hotels and private apartments.

"77% of those who choose Airbnb save money.

On average, almost half the cost they would pay in a hotel, "says researcher at Sheffield Hallam University.

"The platform competes especially with the low-cost hotels, because it does not offer the comforts of the higher level," he adds.

Loyalty programs that save customers and cooperation between hotels on online booking platforms are the two lines of action that the rapporteur has recommended to the sector.

"For every 10% that increases the business of Airbnb, it is reduced by 0.4% the turnover of the hotel industry, which has a large weight in the economy and generates a lot of employment," he said, noting that most cities are Initiating the regulation of these accommodations, to pay taxes or to exclude unlicensed individuals from the market.

"Security is Airbnb's weak point, which offers far fewer guarantees than traditional accommodation," continues Lu.

6 million relocated tourists

Among the 120 researchers from the five continents who attended the congress, many came from Islamic countries, whose tourism sector has been affected by political instability in the area.

"It is estimated that between five and six million tourists who have visited these destinations have relocated in safer areas, such as Spain, which heads the ranking of tourism competitiveness," said Andrés Artal, a professor at the UPCT and organizer of the congress together To the Turkish researchers Nazmi and Metin Kozak.

Among the speakers that investigate the tourism sector from the Universidad Politécnica de Cartagena, the professor of Naval School Jerónimo Esteve explained how the seasonality of cruise tourism is complemented.

"The entire Mediterranean region has a high season between May and October, while from November to April the fleet moves to Atlantic destinations.

No matter how much you try a particular port, you can not counteract the dynamics that affect your entire region, "said the UPCT teacher.

The professor at the Aurora Martínez Polytechnic, Faculty of Business Sciences, has also exposed the benefits in her business results and in her image that can be obtained by hotels that take care of their environment.

"There is increasing demand for social responsibility from customers, who are willing to pay more if they know that the hotel contributes to improving the natural environment," he said.

The congress was inaugurated today by the vice-rector of Research of the UPCT, Beatriz Miguel, and the mayor of Tourism of Cartagena, Obdulia Gómez, who has glossed the tourist attractions of the city.

The Congress Office of the City Council, which has collaborated with the organization of the event, has also distributed to the audience various material with tourist information.
