New cycle of activities of Cartagena Piensa (24/05/2017)

The Department of Culture and the program Cartagena Piensa begin a new cycle of activities with the title of 'The transformations of the rural world in the Region of Murcia'.

The activities will begin this Thursday, May 25 with the screening, at 19.15 hours, at the auditorium of the Ramón Alonso Luzzy Cultural Center, of the documentary 'Danger in the Hive' (Equipo de Chronicles, RTVE, 2013).

The RTVE Chronicles program shows how the wild bee, the main pollinator on the planet, is in danger of extinction, and how beekeepers try to cover the absence of this species.

The report also reports the serious damage caused by neonicotinoid pesticides in bee colonies that pollinate sunflower crops.

Beekeepers lose half of their hives after the campaign, as insecticide venom has permeated the entire ecosystem.

A program team has witnessed how beekeepers maintain biodiversity in the high mountains, thanks to the invention of 'fapimovil'.

It is a trailer loaded with twenty hives that covers the absence of the wild bee.

Free entry until complete seats.

This activity will continue at 20.00h in the same lecture room of the talk-colloquium "Beyond the bees. Risks of the decline of pollinators", by Dr. Mª Pilar de la Rua Tarín (Fac. Biology, University of Murcia), which will be presented by Cari Blázquez (Cartagena Piensa Promoter Group).

Pollinator insects, both wild and managed, provide a wide range of benefits to society for their fundamental contribution to food security as a means of subsistence for beekeepers, as well as in relation to maintaining biodiversity and stability Of ecosystems.

Pollinators are currently facing numerous threats, including changes in land use and increased management intensity, climate change and the use of chemicals to control agricultural pests.

In addition, the management of the pollinators (mainly honey bee and some species of bumblebees) favors the dispersion of pathogens and the introduction of exotic species that can be considered as invasive.

As a consequence of all these factors, the decline of some wild pollinators and managed in several regions of the world has been documented, so that policies and management measures are needed to protect pollinators and maintain pollination services.

Born in Cartagena and raised in the Valley of Escombreras, Pilar de la Rua graduated in Biology from the University of Murcia in 1993, obtained the European Doctorate at the same University in 1999 after a three-year stay at the Technical Universities of Berlin and Martin Luther of Halle / Wittenberg (Germany).

She is currently Professor (accredited as Professor in 2015) of the University of Murcia with teaching in General Biology, Molecular Techniques applied to the study of biodiversity and Apiculture.
