Cartagena participates in the XII meeting of the Network of Intercultural Cities of Spain (RECI-ICC) (03/04/2017)

Madrid hosted last week the XII meeting of the Network of Intercultural Cities of Spain (RECI), to which Cartagena belongs with 12 other municipalities such as Barcelona, Sabadell, Bilbao, San Sebastián, Jerez, Castellón, Parla, Fuenlabrada, Getxo, Logroño, Tenerife and Santa Coloma de Gramanet.

It is a joint action of the Council of Europe and the European Commission, supported by the Social Work of the La Caixa Foundation.

During the first session of the meeting of the Intercultural Cities Network (RECI), the award ceremony 'RECI 2016 Diversity Advantage' was held, in which Cartagena participated with the Project of the Intercultural Centers of the Old Town and Los Dolores, who along with 19 other state initiatives have shown how to take better advantage of the diversity.

As part of this event Diversity Advantage invited the City of Cartagena together with the Getxo to explain the experience of the DELI Project, Diversity in the Economy and Local Integration.

"This project, which ended last year, has enabled the participating cities to put value and know the contribution of migrants in the local economy." In Cartagena, it has been developed From the Agency for Local Development and Employment and the Department of Social Services and Social Mediation, with the collaboration of other municipal departments, "explained the Councilor for Social Services, Carmen Martín del Amor.

During the working day, issues such as the work agenda for the next months of 2017 were addressed, in which the themes related to interculturality and Human Rights will be the focus.

Also, international meetings were marked on the agenda to improve cooperation between the local and the state.

Among them is the meeting to be held at the end of November in Lisbon, which will be attended by relevant politicians and mayors and technicians to address the challenges and inclusive keys and the advantages of diversity.

Also present is the Antirumores Strategy, which will publish a manual in the coming months.

Likewise, it was agreed to continue working on the Intercultural City Index (the ICC index) to assess the progress that each city achieves through the development of its policies to foster coexistence with an intercultural approach.

For this update a new edition of the questionnaire will be available, which will make it easier to make an individual and collective evaluation.

It is also included among the priorities of this year to reopen the dialogue between the State and local entities to promote the management of diversity, for which a work agenda must be built.

The RECI is the only state space linked to the European Intercultural Cities Program which supports cities in the development of an adequate management of cultural diversity.

It promotes the culture of diversity among the political leaders who manage the municipality and the social agents.

It establishes networks of support and exchange of experiences between the different cities and coordinates with the Council of Europe for the fulfillment of the basic principles of Human Rights and democracy.

The member cities of the network carry out actions that at European level are established for the promotion of coexistence and intercultural dialogue.

The next meeting of the network will be held in Castellón.
