European experts on pollution by metals and hydrocarbons meet at the UPCT (29/03/2017)

This week the meetings of the 'Soil take care' project have been held at the UPCT, in which the research group, Management, Use and Recovery of Soils and Waters (GARSA) participates.

The project is funded by the community program SUDOE, which allocates its funds to projects to solve common problems in the regions of south-west Europe.

In addition, this project participates as an associate entity the Directorate General of Quality and Environmental Assessment of CARM.

Specifically, Soil take care focuses on the context of oil and heavy metal contamination of soils and waters by industrial and mining activities and their transfer to ecosystems and human beings.

Three areas have been selected: the Sierra Minera de Cartagena-La Unión (Spain), the contaminated industrial areas of Escombreras (Spain), Esterreja (Portugal) and Viviez (France).

Its development aims to implement methodologies and strategies to carry out rapid diagnosis of pollution in soils, water and atmosphere in industrial and mining areas, as well as to establish the best mitigation and remediation strategies, based on the contamination found, and to provide data To update the main legislation on the subject.

The project includes such ambitious goals as preventing the dispersion of contamination of contaminated areas through numerical aerial, water and soil erosion modeling;

Establish tools and models that facilitate the tasks of remediation of soils by metals and hydrocarbons;

Characterize the impact of the transfer of pollutants on ecosystems and human populations;

To determine the bioaccessibility of metallic elements according to specific local conditions and to establish social and environmental priorities for the sustainable development of the regions involved in the project, thereby determining more precisely the critical thresholds for better regulation In relation to the quality of the soil and air.

"Soil Take Care" aims to improve regional soil contamination mapping by means of mineralogical techniques (XRD, FTIR), geochemical (ICMPS, XRF) and satellite imagery, improving the accuracy of in situ measurements, reducing their cost, preferably , Passive sensors and establishing specific measurement protocols that will also allow better definition of the critical thresholds within the SUDOE zone.

The project highlights the creation of an innovative, fast and inexpensive instrument for measuring and diagnosing (mapping) soil pollutants.

"So, from the development of this project there will be a common guide for all the countries of south-west Europe in the matter of soil recovery subject to the problem," says researcher Lola Gómez.

In this meeting in Cartagena, researchers from the participating institutions participated: Center National de la Recherche Scientifique Délégation Midi-Pyrénées, Universite de Limoges, Institut Polytechnique de Bordeaux, Institut National de Recherche en Sciences et technologiespourl'environnement et l'agriculturne ( France);

Instituto Superior Técnico (Portugal);

The University of Oviedo and the Fundació CTM Center Tecnològic (Spain), which have presented the environmental problems of their areas and discussed the best systems to be used in the area of the Sierra Minera de La Unión, through the in situ characterization of The problems, as well as the definition of the preliminary actions to be carried out in the area of the Escombreras Valley.
