Puerto de Culturas will include the historic buildings of the Politecnica de Cartagena on a tourist route (28/03/2017)

Cartagena Puerto de Culturas will start from April the first tourist route for the historic buildings of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT), which will focus on the headquarters of the Higher Technical School of Industrial Engineering (ETSII), which Housed the old Marine Hospital in the past.

This was presented on Tuesday, March 28, the Deputy Mayor of Cartagena and president of Cartagena Puerto de Culturas, Ana Belén Castejón, and the rector of the UPCT, Alejandro Diaz, who have been accompanied by the Vice Chancellor of Campus and Sustainability of the UPCT, Marcos Ros, and technicians responsible for the project.

The deputy mayor stressed that Cartagena "has the privilege of having a university such as the Polytechnic, which for years tried to set up in the heart of the historic center and for the rehabilitation of emblematic buildings for the whole municipality for both historical value and value architectural".

These buildings, he assured, have gone from being "almost in ruins" to becoming "spaces full of life where hundreds of young people build their own future."

Castejón thanked the rector for his "immediate and very positive" response by sending him the proposal, months ago, to start these tourist routes on the part of Cartagena Puerto de Culturas and open the buildings to the public.

Thus, the first of these routes will focus on the ETSII, a 250-year-old building with more than 30,000 square meters of space and which the Deputy Mayor has described as "one of the greatest buildings in the Region, not only for its proportions, But also for its construction and originality ".

It is part of a series of military works carried out in the 18th century, with three floors and an attic that houses the Museum of Engineering, Technology and Industry (MITI).

This route is called "Ingenios and Inventions" and will begin at ETSII, where you will be able to visit all the facilities until you reach MITI, where you will visit your permanent collection, and you will end up in the Museum Civil War Refuge with the Lumière exhibition, 'The illusion of a dream'.

This activity, announced Ana Belén Castejón, will be held for a few days, such as 1 and 22 April, 6 and 27 May, and 10 and 24 June, starting at 11.30 hours and with a price Of 8 euros.

For its part, the rector of the UPCT thanked the City Council and Cartagena Puerto de Culturas the opportunity to carry out this tourist route within the facilities of the polytechnic and has emphasized the commitment of the university that directs to "open to The society, "while ensuring that" this is a first step, there are sure to be many more routes and activities, which the Consortium, the City of Cartagena and the university can develop for the sake of citizens and tourists. Thus, he said that "Cartagena, and specifically the Polytechnic University we have an impressive architectural heritage," and recalled that the educational institution has three buildings of military architecture of the eighteenth century and a building of modernist style, which houses the rectorate.

The rehabilitation of these buildings, he recalled, "a work of many years and a lot of money, but we are very proud of it and when you are proud of something you have, what you like most is to teach it."

Likewise, it has enhanced the MITI, which has described as "a modest museum but has pieces of great historical value, informative and playful related to the industry."

CHILDREN'S AND FAMILY ACTIVITIES ON THE CINEMA

The deputy mayor has taken the opportunity to recall the special programming of activities for families and children, including three children's workshops such as 'Create cartoons', which will take place on April 2 and 23 and May 7 and 28 at the price of 6 euros;

'Little actors', which began in March and will also arrive on the next 9 and 30 April and 14 and 14 May, also for 6 euros;

And the workshop '3, 2, 1, action', every Sunday in June, with a price of 3.5 euros.

All these workshops, has pointed out the president of Cartagena Puerto de Culturas, will be held in the Museum Civil War Refuge, at 12.00 p.m.

In addition, on Friday, June 16, the theater and live music show 'Cinema cabaret' has been programmed, in which "you can enjoy scenes of films like Dancing in the Rain, Chicago or Moulin Rouge", and Will take place in the Museo Refugio de la Civil Civil, at 10 pm.
