Cartagena firefighters celebrate their patron with a mass and a wine of honor (08/03/2017)

The fire department of the Fire and Rescue Service of the Cartagena City Council celebrates this Wednesday, March 8, the festival of its patron saint, San Juan de Dios.

The celebrations have included a Mass which took place during the morning in the Basilica of Our Lady of Charity, which was attended by the Mayor, José López, the Councilor for Security, Francisco Aznar, and the Head of the service, Francisco Gómez Ávalos, along with other civil and military authorities.

Subsequently a wine of honor has been served to the attendees in the Central Hall of the Hotel Alfonso XIII, which has given some distinctions to firefighters who have retired during the year, and this Sunday, March 12, there will be Exhibition and exhibition of vehicles of the fire department in the Plaza del Palacio Consistorial.

Thus, "it will be an open day for all citizens who want to get closer to see our vehicles and where they can also see a small demonstration of a rescue after a traffic accident and rappel descent," as explained by the head of the service.

On the occasion of these celebrations, the mayor of Cartagena has shown his pride to attend the mass in honor of the patron of firefighters, San Juan de Dios, as well as Spanish wine in honor of this body.

He also recalled that this Portuguese saint became the patron of firefighters when he "saved sick from a hospital burning in Granada."

In addition, it has wished that the service of Fire Extinguishing and Rescue of Cartagena continue giving service to the District of the Field of Cartagena "but with an amparo already of firemen of district and with more entity, although it is not little".

Thus, although there are still no news on this issue, the mayor has reminded that this Thursday, March 9, has scheduled a meeting with professors and technicians of the University of Murcia to delve into the comarcalization, and that the Next meeting between the mayors of the Campo de Cartagena will be next Friday, March 17.

For his part, Francisco Aznar has valued that "it is a body that is always in all emergencies of Cartagena and nearby localities" and has highlighted the work they have done "in the floods we had in Cartagena and in the aid that They lent to the Town Halls of Torre Pacheco and Los Alcázares where there was an endowment of firemen providing aid in the floods that unfortunately had these towns ".

In addition, the Councilor for Citizen Security has assessed that "is a large family" with "great professionalism" and has qualified as "heroes", so, he said, "for next year, we will increase the workforce Of firemen ".

Thus, in principle, at least eight or nine vacancies will be covered at present, although the final public employment offer will depend on a pending restructuring, since "we are going to also do an internal promotion" in the fire brigade.

THE FIRE EXTINGUISHMENT AND RESCUE SERVICE TODAY

The Fire Extinguishing Service of Cartagena has a staff of 107 firefighters, with about 25 vehicles that will be expanded soon.

And is that, as has progressed the head of the body, in a few days the service will premiere an urban truck, given by Port Authority and that on Sunday will be exposed along with others so that citizens can see it.

In addition, stressed Gómez Ávalos, intend to acquire a truck for attention of traffic accidents, known as a van for various services.

Thus, he stressed that the annual interventions of firefighters in Cartagena, during the last three years, are around 1,500 actions per year.

"We are in a point of stability in the number of interventions as well as in its typology", indicated the head of the firemen.

In this sense, has explained that there has been a slight increase in care interventions or entry to homes of older people living alone.

"They call us neighbors or relatives so we can check if they are okay," he explained.

The dates with higher incidences are usually during the summer, where small fire events occur, as well as days of especially intense winds.
