This Saturday, February 18 will be held in the waters of the port of Cartagena the 1st City of Cartagena Dragon Boat Trophy, organized by the Royal Regatta Club of the city (RCRC).

The competition will start at 10:00 am in the area of ​​the Muelle Norte, in the inner basin, and the day will be extended until approximately 13:00 hours.

The councilman of Sports of the City of Cartagena, Ricardo Segado, presented the event this Thursday in the company of rowing and canoeing vocal and the technical director of the Club, Ginés García and Eduardo Gallego, respectively.

Also present at the event were the brothers and coaches of the entity in this mode Pedro and David Pardo, who have been competitors in national and international tests and are high level athletes.

The Dragon Boat is a mode of rowing regatta, of Asian provenance, which has experienced a spectacular growth since arriving in Europe.

It consists of a boat decorated with the head and tail of a dragon, with a helmsman at the stern and a drummer who from the bow is marking the rhythm of the stroke that must be followed by the crew members.

This competition requires great coordination among all members and is very complex.

This first edition will have the participation of 150 players from the 15 teams that have confirmed their attendance, although they continue registering clubs.

Also, the RCRC contributes the four own equipment that owns, and competes with between eight and ten crews.

Each of these combinations is subdivided into three crews: male, female and mixed.

In the case of the 1st Trofeo Ciudad de Cartagena de Dragon Boat, there will be tests of the 'DB-12' modality, in which crews of 10 paddlers plus the helmsman and the drum are embarked.

Also, the competition will be based on speed, since they will be races of 200 meters, which is the shortest distance in which it competes in this discipline.

At other times you can reach distances of 2000 or even 5000 and 10000 meters.

Councilor for Sports, Ricardo Segado, has highlighted the intensity and the spectacular of this type of tests, whose brevity, due to its speed, is one of the essential characteristics.

On the other hand, it has pointed out that this sports discipline has a "great future" in the city and has emphasized the possibilities offered at the level of promotion of Cartagena waters and the municipality itself.

"It is to thank the Royal Club of Regatas de Cartagena the organization and the promotion of new sports modalities related to the sea and with our port," he pointed out.

"The Department of Sports of the City of Cartagena is next to the sport and events that favor its practice and tourism promotion of the city," added the mayor.

Eduardo Gallego, technical director of the Club, highlighted "the RCRC's commitment to this sport in canoeing," which he described as "quite aggressive", since the entity began two years ago and already has more than 70 paddlers .

In addition, he has remarked that they are gaining adherents among the youth public, a group that considers "very important".

On the other hand, according to Gallego, "the idea is to try in the winter months to have an important influx, both in the Club and in the city."

From the RCRC they set a goal for the near future, which focuses on "having in February a high level competition with foreign teams", not only with regional and national combined, and link it to tourism.

The rowing and canoeing vocalist, Ginés García, has indicated that "the RCRC is betting very strongly for this activity", a modality that is a "young specialty in Europe", but that in Canada, in Asian countries as in China, mainly , And in the US "has a lot of presence", although "here is developing more and more," he said.

"We are working on the Dragon Boat Regional Committee to promote this sport and that the Federation of Canoeing in the Region of Murcia assume that the Dragon is a specialty of canoeing," he said.

As soon as the day ends, there will be paella for all the paddlers, and all the rowers of the top three teams in each category will receive a medal.

All the attendees have invited the public to attend these spectacular races and have stressed that people approaching the dock can have a good perspective of the competition, as it will be developed at a distance close to the pier, thus visibility Will be good.
