The Association for the Recovery of the Indigenous Forest (ARBA) of Cartagena has planted more than 2000 trees this winter in the Cartagena mountains (06/02/2017)

The Association for the Recovery of the Native Forest (ARBA) is a national organization whose main objective is the recovery of the forests that formerly covered the Iberian Peninsula and for that purpose uses exclusively indigenous species of the area.

During this autumn and winter has been planted around 2000 species of trees and shrubs indigenous to the sierras of Cartagena.

During November and December, ARBA promoted the recovery of the cypress forests of Cartagena (Tetraclinis articulata) with three days of planting in the mount of the barracks of Fajardo, at the entrance of the Port of Cartagena.

These reforestation activities were part of the dissemination activities of the LIFE Tetraclinis project, which aims to conserve and recover the cypress forests of Cartagena (Tetraclinis articulata), a type of ecosystem that the European Union has classified as habitat 9570. It is a type of Mediterranean forest exceptional for the great variety and biodiversity of botanical species and typical of North Africa and that throughout the European continent only exists in the sierras of Cartagena, from Monte Roldán to Cabo de Palos.

Many of these unique cypress forests of Cartagena have survived to this day, thanks to the fact that they have been protected in piles of public property, mainly military, such as those of Monte Roldán or those of the battery of Ashes.

The reforestation project in Fajardo has the collaboration of the Spanish Navy, owner of the land, and the Association of Naturalists of the Southeast (ANSE).

On the other hand, the habitat of black sabina (Juniperus phoenicea), classified by the European Union as habitat 5210 'juniperus thickets', has been recovered in public lands in the Cabo area Tiñoso.

Cabo Tiñoso is the area of the sierras of Cartagena that presents a lower rate of precipitation and, therefore, a vegetation adapted to the extreme dryness of the climate, with a multitude of exclusive endemic species and exceptional habitats within the European Union.

In this most eastern part of the municipality, the habitat of the Tetraclinis gives way to the scrub of the inframediterranean, with juniper and juniper trees that replace the cypress of Cartagena.

The recovery project for these coastal savannas of Cabo Tiñoso counts with the collaboration of the company ILBOC, of the Valley of Escombreras.

Due to the intense exploitation of the exceptional quality of sabina wood in the past, and the clearing of cultivated land, the juniperus juniperus phoenicea is a regressive habitat in the Region of Murcia and the objective of ARBA is to contribute to its Recovery through a long-term project called 'CABO TIÑOSO REVIVE', which aims at environmental restoration and dissemination of the natural and cultural heritage of this unique enclave of the geography Cartagena.

In the restoration of Cabo Tiñoso, species have been used especially resistant to drought and are not usually used in forest plantations to use, such as the corn (Periploca angustifolia) or the broom (Ephedra fragilis), along with dozens of seedlings Black juniper (Juniperus phoenicea) and red juniper (Juniperus oxycedrus), which have been produced from seeds collected in Cabo Tiñoso itself by the Association of Naturalists of the Southeast (ANSE) and the ARBA association itself.

In addition, hundreds of palm heart seeds have been planted.

About 130 volunteers participated in the various planting days, both in Fajardo and Cabo Tiñoso, with the collaboration of ILBOC, the Association of Naturalists of the Southeast and the Spanish Armada.

The purpose of ARBA Cartagena is to continue the recovery activities of these exceptional forests in the coming seasons.
