MC maintains in the Government, as he did in the opposition, his desire that the prison of San Antón be destined for public use (23/01/2017)

MC will present a motion for debate in the municipal plenary to be held tomorrow, which will request the support of the political groups to urge the local government to resume contacts with the state and regional government for the transfer of the old prison From San Antón to the town of Cartagena.

Once ceded, the channels would be articulated to provide it with different public uses, involving this historic infrastructure in the day to day of the municipality.

In this task, the Town Hall and other administrations would work in solidarity.

In addition, the text states that, if the property is adjudicated to a mercantile, negotiate with it the use of the prison for social purposes to facilitate its valuation with the purpose of returning it to the citizens, contributing to regenerate the Property and the area where it is located.

It should be recalled that, in July 2013, a motion of MC urged to propose some type of agreement or assignment to recover the building for the City and provide it with an alternative use for citizenship thus ending with the deterioration, plunder and unhealthiness of property.

This initiative, which recognized the impossibility of the City Council to undertake any action to refurbish the property, was rejected by the municipal council with the vote against the PP, citing the limited capacity of the administration that made it difficult to invest and then maintain current expenditure.

This fact evidences that MC is the only group of the current Corporation that has been interested in being in the opposition by the prison of San Antón and continues doing it also from the Government, demonstrating coherence with us, with Cartagena and with the reality.

In this line of coherence, MC promoted that the local Government made contacts in April of 2016 to return the prison of San Antón to the patrimony of the municipality.

The deplorable state of the property made unquantifiable the value of putting the prison in use and its assignment as a public space to citizens.

San Antón Prison

Constructed between 1935 and 1936 by Vicente Agustí Elguero, it has a pentagonal shape and has five towers that required a greater contribution of personnel for its surveillance.

It was known as the safest of the prisons of Spain, denominating itself between the prisoners like 'the safe'.

Among its walls lived inmates of the media repercussion of 'The Lute'.
