The mayor of Cartagena, José López, said that the acquisition of the former Hotel Peninsular in Cuatro Santos street was a decision of the former municipal government that has executed the current one million euros less.
López has appeared in the early hours of this afternoon to explain the circumstances of the purchase of this property that will be used to expand the dependencies of the Administrative Building and to accommodate the municipal services currently occupying the old graduates, which will go only to Activities related to education and culture.
The statement made by the mayor was as follows:
"I appear before you because an opposition party has called the media this morning to raise doubts about the work of this government and, in particular, this Mayor.
In this case on the acquisition of the property named "Hotel Peninsular", property located on Calle Cuatro Santos, numbers 3 and 5, according to agreement of Governing Board of last December 29, 2016.
As it is known, it is the alternative that was viable after "Altamira", real estate of the Santander group, modified the negotiation with this City to transmit the Central cinema to the regional executive, who was the first option of the local government.
The amount of around 500,000 euros available to the City Council before the end of the year was decided to go to another acquisition or acquisitions for municipal heritage, since it is known that it is necessary to implement the budget items, in fact the same group Of the opposition has demanded these days.
As I stated publicly when the acquisition of the Central Cinema by the Autonomous Community was known, we had to take up several alternatives that during the year had been studied, some have transcended and others have not, but all such as the one that has been carried out seeking dynamization, Social inclusion and optimization of public resources.
The one that has materialized has been this, to be forced (for 11 years it has been at the table of previous governments), and the most functional for the administration, in addition to the one that was adjusted to the assessments of municipal technicians.
This property may be put to use imminently, this year 2017 for municipal services as administrative equipment that is.
What does it mean that it is administrative equipment?
That in 2005 this land was included as a general system of administrative equipment by unanimity of the plenary, specifically on November 7, 2005, dismissing the owners' claim that it was considered equipment, who defended maintaining their business.
The 5 of July of 2006, being councilman of urbanism Agustín Guillén, begins the file of expropriation, to be forced after being considered administrative equipment.

The acquisition is part of the municipal heritage reorganization plan and will allow graduates to use the cultural space and relocate municipal staff working in that building and other offices in the administrative building of San Miguel, improving citizen service.
And it will also serve to improve the area where the property itself is located, degraded by prostitution, which was implanted in the historic Casco without the previous corporation to stop it.
The inability of the previous government to solve the problems forces us once again to an economic outlay and try to use it to cast doubt.
I explain, and with this I finish, the operation that has been carried out is the one that should have been done in these 11 years.

The file is uncorrupted, I am sure, because it is the one that the technicians have made, to fulfill the obligation of the City Council to acquire the property, because it was decided by the government of Pilar Barreiro, with its councilors Agustín Guillén, Joaquín Segado and Francisco Espejo .
If there is something irregular to explain and demand, even now years later, responsibility for incapacity and negligence, or at least be able to stop lying and hamper with it the work of a government that in addition to improving and excite Cartagena has been paying its debts and its invoices for 18 months, which, like this acquisition, appear daily and in very important quantities.
