The Faculty of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) today agreed to appoint Doctor Honoris Causa to Manuel Torres Martínez, national prize for Innovation 2015 and president of the international company MTorres, which has one of its two factories in Spain in Fuente Álamo.
Manuel Torres, born in the village of Aljucer 73 years ago, founded in 1975 MTorres Diseños Industriales SA in Torres de Elorz (Navarra), for the development of Industrial Automation Systems.
At present, the MTorres industrial group employs more than 600 people, 80% of whom are highly qualified technicians and allocate 10% of their income to R + D + I projects.
The UPCT is the main source of human resources for its factory in the Region, mainly industrial and Telecommunication engineers.
The company has 41 graduates of the Polytechnic of Cartagena and maintains a close collaboration on R & D & I.
In addition, the company is included in the Network of Chairs.
The appointment of Manuel Torres as Doctor Honoris Causa is an initiative of the Higher Technical School of Industrial Engineering, defended by the director of the Department of Graphic Expression Francisco José Fernández Cañavate.
During the Laudatio, Cañavate stressed that Torres sacrificed the money he had saved to buy a flat before marrying to innovate in the company where he worked as a maintenance technician.
At present, 80% of its turnover of this company, leader in more than 60 countries, belongs to the export activity.
The Cloister, the highest representative body of the University, has unanimously agreed to the appointment of Manuel Torres.
