The world leader in botanical conservation visits the Institute of Plant Biotechnology of the UPCT (11/11/2016)

The Polytechnic sent to London seeds of thirty species of interest of the coastal ranges of Cartagena and persecutes that its students can practice in the British center 11.nov.2016.- Elinor Breman, responsible for coordination with the collaborating partners of the Royal Botanic Gardens , Kew, visited this Friday the facilities of the Institute of Plant Biotechnology of the UPCT, as well as the School of Agronomists of Cartagena and the experimental farm Tomás Ferro.

The visit follows the formalization of the collaboration begun this year between the two institutions with the sending of seeds of about thirty different species of flora of interest in the coastal mountains of Cartagena, collected by the team of María José Vicente Colomer and Juan José Martínez Sánchez under the protection of a flora conservation project in the Sierra de la Fausilla, financed by the Port Authority of Cartagena in 2015.

Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, located in London, England, a leading center in botanical research considered as the world leader for science, research and conservation of plants, contains one of the most important seed banks in the world and has Has been declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco.

The UPCT's Plant Biotechnology Institute, led by Marcos Egea, is the Germplasm Bank of the UPCT, an installation that houses an important collection of seeds with more than 1,000 seed lots of 260 different plant species.

This collaboration with the Kew Botanical Garden will make a significant advance in the learning of seed conservation techniques and a guarantee of conservation of our plant genetic resources by retaining duplicates of IBV seed lots at Millenium Sedd Bank.

On the other hand, it will be negotiated both the possibility of the students of the School of Agronomists of Cartagena to practice in the facilities of the United Kingdom and to carry out joint research projects, a priority objective of the new direction of the IBV.

The Millenium Seed Bank project of the Kew botanist is considered the most ambitious conservation project in the world, through which the ENSCONET or European Network for the Conservation of Wild Seeds is coordinated, with the aim of preserving biological diversity to avoid disappearance Of endemic species in European regions.

To this end, it encourages seed conservation activities in institutes throughout Europe, to improve its quality and to promote the integration and coordination of European conservation centers, distributing the work within the network in 4 areas of activity: collection, Conservation, database and dissemination.

It also aims to facilitate the study and research of European biodiversity, promoting the exchange of experiences, protocols and infrastructures, in order to optimize seed conservation, collaborate with the European Union's conservation policy and help achieve the objectives Of the Convention on Biodiversity Conservation and its Global Conservation Strategy
