An international conference awards simulator tractor rollover UPCT (18/10/2016)

The virtual reality scene by Lola Ojados is distinguished as the best communication among more than 100 submitted to the conclave on Occupational Health and Safety held in Colombia

The researcher at the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) Lola Ojados has received the award for the best paper presented, among more than 100 'papers' in the XVI International Conference on Occupation Risk Prevention (ORP), held this month in Cartagena de Indias (Colombia) for its driving simulator and overturning tractor with swing arc.

"With the software you can check the effectiveness of the arc without overturn a real tractor," explains Ojados, head of Service of Industrial Design and Science (SEDIC) Calculation Support Service for Technological Research (SAIT) and professor associated with the department of Graphic Expression of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena.

The swing arc is an automatic drive system patented by the UPCT in the line of projects in New Safety Devices Machines coordinating Isidro Ibarra, coordinator of the Joint Masters of Occupational Health and Safety and professor Martin Bernardo ETSIA.

"We can parameterize the dimensions and specifications of all tractor models and test the arc to different risks, speeds or inclinations of the terrain," says the researcher.

"The software is also used to investigate retrospectively the causes of accidents tractor, as we have also done with a forklift simulator" he adds.

The simulator can be played on different screens, from a computer to a mobile phone via an 'app' specifically developed, but the most realistic experience living with a virtual reality goggles to enter the scene and even more with the platform driving with steering wheel, pedals and controls own a work vehicle, the UPCT is installed in a room immersion in virtual reality at the Centre for Development and Technological Innovation (CEDIT) Fuente Alamo.

The platform has three degrees of freedom and reproduces the movement depending on the terrain where the virtual circle tractor.

"The feeling of tipping is very real, so in addition to simulate an accident contributes to raise awareness of the importance of safety arch and the existence of risk," says Ojados.

"The application of new technologies opens up a range of possibilities for the training of workers, prevention of occupational hazards and accident investigation," summarizes Lola Ojados.
