Culture ordered the immediate protection of the remains of the ancient port of Carthago Nova found in Llagostera House (13/10/2016)

The Minister of Culture and the regional government spokesman, Noelia Arroyo visited this morning the remains of the port of ancient Carthago Nova, altoimperial dating (first century AD), recently found during the execution of works in the famous Casa Llagostera, in the main street of Cartagena.

Arroyo, who was accompanied by archaeologist Francisco Fernandez Matallana, recalled that "the works have been at all times under archaeological supervision by the decision issued from the Ministry of Culture and Spokesman in 2015 to the possibility that were found, as This has happened, port structures of the Roman city and avoid possible damage ".

The works carried out on the site of House Llagostera allowed came to light an important confirmed by a great wall of sandstone blocks well squared and reinforced inside with a masonry wall stuck with lime mortar structure whose elevation is still unknown .

The structure would be part of the waterfront, as evidenced by the presence of sand and marine sediments in the outer area of ​​the wall and the grooves on some stones that could be used to place rings for mooring boats.

Parallel to this wall, was found another ashlar sandstone and topped by slabs of gray limestone and, uniting both have documented other perpendicular walls that would subject the functions of the structure.

These walls also have a constructive uniqueness of inserting logs in structure, forming a rare joint work.

Historically, the location of the excavated site is located in the area where most researchers believe that had placed the port area of ​​Carthago Nova, on the western edge of the city.

Therefore, and although the documentation work is not finished, experts believe that it is the wall of the waterfront or port of Carthago Nova, whose chronology would be framed in the mid to late s.

Considering the result of the first reports, Noelia Arroyo said that "this is a finding of particular relevance for archaeological research of Carthago Nova, because until now only available an inscription referring to the port and is currently on display at the Museum national Underwater Archaeology Cartagena, the ARQUA ".

He recalled, "there are very few testimonies of the Roman port architecture that can be studied in our country, so this discovery will consolidate Cartagena and Murcia as a benchmark in the world of archeology."

Aware of this, he added, "from the regional government we will work to continue to be an example of recovery, conservation and enhancement of our rich heritage and that this new discovery will join other milestones such as the recovery of the Roman Theater, now converted into the most visited museum in the region and one of the most important in Spain ".
