The UPCT participates in a European project on rehabilitation of degraded soils by metals and hydrocarbons (19/08/2016)

The research group in Management, Use and Recovery of Soil and Water (GARSA) of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) participates in the European project on rehabilitation of contaminated metals and hydrocarbons 'Soil take care' areas just adopted the SUDOE Community program aimed at solving common problems of the regions of southwestern Europe.

During the project, which has funding of two million euros, centers and research institutes and universities in France, Spain and Portugal will develop protocols with innovative and proven methodologies rehabilitation of degraded by industry techniques and mining .

The research group of the Polytechnic is part of the project for its expertise in environmental rehabilitation and enhancement, from the tourist point of view and educational, mining deposits, such as Santa Antoinette, in La Union.

In the region of Cartagena are numerous and diverse spaces degraded by metals and hydrocarbons from Portmán to Hondón, through tailings and 58 tailing ponds in the Sierra Minera.

"European legislation requires owners to rehabilitate contaminated areas, but so far the authorities and private developers do not have guidance on how to undertake the intervention or know how much it can cost to seek funding, which is always the biggest problem "he explains the head of GARSA, Angel Faz.
