Culture meets with the Brotherhood of Socorro to see the restoration project of the chapel of the Old Cathedral of Cartagena (17/08/2016)

The Minister of Culture and the regional government spokesman, Noelia Arroyo met with the elder brother of the Brotherhood of the Holy and Real Christ Relief Cartagena, Manuel Martinez Guillen, to meet the restoration project of the Chapel of Relief Old Cathedral of Cartagena.

The project was presented at the end of July in the Ministry of Culture and Spokesperson and is being evaluated by experts from the Directorate General of Cultural Property for the report to authorize the works in this house, declared of Cultural Interest ( BIC).

Arroyo said that these new conservation works in the Chapel of Socorro "would be added to those made this year by the Diocese of Cartagena, at the request of the Ministry of Culture, which have already allowed in the July first open Old Cathedral of Cartagena to the public, thus fulfilling the Law on Cultural Heritage of the Region ".

The Old Cathedral, as previously announced, will open the last four days of each month and in August visits can be made on 27, 29, 30 and 31, from 10:00 to 12:00 hours. "

From the Ministry of Culture it will be advised from now those responsible for the Brotherhood of Christ Relief everything necessary "to take a further step in the enhancement and recovery for the citizens of this emblematic area of ​​Cartagena and of the region, following examples such as the Roman Theatre Museum, which has become a reference in cultural tourism and a symbol of the asset recovery by betting the regional government ".

The drafting of the project for the Chapel of Cristo del Socorro has made the architect Juan de Dios de la Hoz and its implementation will intervene in the internal parameters of the chapel, in his dressing room and in a limited area of ​​the decks surrounding the chapel where water leaks have been detected.

With the conservation work planned maintenance and construction problems will be solved humidity present in walls and floor and the dressing room to be conditioned, proceeding to restore the wooden elements that comprise, in addition to dealing with the problem of moisture.

Also, the water inlet in the future will prevent exterior finishes and will be improved.

The Capilla del Cristo del Socorro is located in the ancient church of Santa María de Cartagena, known as the Old Cathedral of Cartagena.

This is the second side chapel on the side of the Epistle and is next to the Chapel of the Four Saints, one of the elements better than preserved, thanks in part to previous repair and restoration.

History of the chapel

The construction of the Chapel of Socorro, owned by the cartagenera brotherhood of the same name, is dated 1691, and was built as thanks for the healing of a son of the Duke of Veragua.

It has rectangular plant covered with an octagonal dome on scallops.

It is decorated with plasterwork, where plant motifs intermingle with cherubs, highlighting the decoration in the spandrels, framing the windows and nerves.

The cover is made of stucco Baroque style.

It has a semicircular alcove high on the south facade, which is accessed through a back staircase which is reached from the presbytery of the chapel.

Also, the Cathedral of Cartagena is considered a foundation of St. James to half of the first century AD, although the date of its construction is unknown.

It is known that was rebuilt in the thirteenth century after the reconquest of the city by the then Prince Alfonso (Alfonso X the Wise) and would be included in the defensive area of ​​Monte de la Concepción.
