More reviewed nests and eggs located, but fewer chicks in the last campaign to control gulls (29/07/2016)

The City Council appreciates a year the cooperation of citizens in municipal control campaign seagulls has been developed between the months of April and June, and has resulted in the location of 127 nests, 281 eggs and 13 chicks variety yellow-legged, which is the most abundant in this area.

Of these, perhaps the most significant figure is the number of chicks, well below the 61 that were located last year, thanks to the campaign has been conducted at the time of maximum nesting in order to reach almost one hundred percent of nests while they are still eggs, and going over into chick.

During this campaign, they have controlled 267 points on the roofs and terraces of buildings, mainly in areas near the port area.

Many of these points correspond to those that had located the presence of these birds in previous years and others that have been pointing out the citizens themselves, through phone calls.

The report made by the company Belmonte Hygiene Control, which the City Council responsible for conducting these campaigns, also figure reflected the evolution of the participation of citizens from 53 warnings in 2012 to 75 this year, although with a short break in 2015, who made 37.

Therefore, there has been a decrease of nestings, mild, and entering a phase of decline in the population of gulls in the town, although the trend nesting, as in previous years, is concentrated in the coastal area.

ADOPTING MEASURES TO FOLLOW

For a more effective bird population control, citizenship must continue to address a number of important recommendations:

Do not throw food in parks, squares or gardens.

Efficient waste collection (schools, colleges, ...) school environment.

Do not feed them, both Gaviotas as Palomas, etc.

Close well RSU containers after use, especially near food markets and large shopping and leisure areas.

Where were observed nests in previous years, put obstacles, whenever possible, so they can not return to nest, or simply observe campaign season the new formation of the nest, thus alerting the services annual campaign to ensure a more prompt and effective action.

Although it is a persistent bird, gulls generally tend to remember traumatic situations experienced before, so try to avoid live them again.
