"I want my house to work alone" (07/07/2016)

Lights that turn on when it gets dark, washing machines start to work when they warn that are full or air conditioning acclimatized housing depending on what the temperature inside the home.

It sounds like fiction, but these everyday activities are just some of the ideas they have in mind Hugo, Diego and Alvaro, all 13, and students of the summer course at the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) 'Learn to manufacture robots with Scratch for Arduino '.

Through simple lessons, IEEE volunteers from the association show students UPCT keys programming Arduino, by learning, for example, light bulbs when they want.

"You can do anything with programming, I want my house to work alone," says an enthusiastic Alvaro Villena, who already thinks about having a home and home automation solve everyday tasks by programming.

"This I can use it even when I break the computer," stresses.

It is the first time the summer university offers a course like this.

The coordinator, Felipe Segura, says it has had enough acceptance.

They have signed up 26 people, mostly children, although there are also some other adult, mainly teachers who want to update their technological knowledge.

"With this knowledge everyone can use their computer for whatever you want.

It is they who put their limits, "says Segura, who explains to the class through programming" can do anything ", highlights examples of developments UPCT as drones, automatic irrigation systems, prostheses or 3D printers.

One of the young, Hugo Bravo, very interested in the lesson shown because it allows you to interact with the real world digital.

"So far bulbs founded" jokes, "but at an advanced level you can set up an interactive whiteboard".

Most of them seek to programming utility to make life a little easier.

Diego Muñoz dreams designed its own security system.

"You learn in a more advanced level, but after these classes I want to keep learning," he says.

One of the main objectives of the course has been achieved: to offer students a motivation to encourage them to continue learning.
