The Regional Assembly requested protective measures for Atalaya Castle (24/05/2016)

The Commission on Education and Culture of the Regional Assembly unanimously adopted a motion put forward by the deputy, Elena Ruiz Valderas in which the Government of Spain requested protection Atalaya Castle of Cartagena.

The initiative, which reflects the concerns of the Friends of the Castillo de la Atalaya, seeks halt its deterioration and promote the consolidation of a building valuable part of the defensive system of the Plaza and the Arsenal of Cartagena motivated by the creation of the capital of the Mediterranean Maritime Department in 1728 in the city.

During his speech the popular deputy recalled that there is an item approved for the final version of "Project protection and consolidation of Atalaya Castle" and now it is necessary to implement the project in the Ministry of Economy and Finance, said Ruiz .

The popular regional deputy recalled that this strength is a work of eclectic neoclassical style was designed by the military engineer Pedro Martín-Paredes Zermeño and completed in 1777 and highlights its important role during the Cantonal war and centralist siege of Cartagena, culminating in the surrender of the place.

The castle was reversed by the Ministry of Defense in 1989, date in which happens to be owned by Patrimonio.

We are facing a very important testimony of the defensive architecture of Cartagena and implementation of this project would correct its state of disrepair, Elena Ruiz said.

At the request of the PSOE it has approved an amendment addition to Autonomous Community and the City of Cartagena study a plan valorization of fortresses and castles owned by the municipality of Cartagena.
