Women run smaller and less technology companies than men, according to a thesis UPCT (08/03/2016)

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) murcianas run by women are characterized by smaller and have a less developed than those led by men, according to a doctoral thesis defends Wednesday at the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) technological position.

Research by Monica Garcia Solarte collected data from 600 SMEs in the Region of Murcia and 120 of the Colombian city of Cali, where originates this PhD student.

"The results show that companies where women are managers primarily engaged in the service sector and are mostly family owned," he explains.

The thesis deals with the influence of gender in culture and leadership in SMEs and notes that "encourage more teamwork and empower employees to make decisions and take risks women managers," adds the researcher.

"Businesses run by women are seen as a big family (culture clan), compared to market culture in which you work primarily by objective, which predominates in companies with managers men," says Domingo Garcia Perez de Lema, director of the thesis together with Antonia Madrid Guijarro.

Both are researchers at the Faculty of Business of the UPCT.

"To contribute to gender equality in SMEs must achieve a cultural change within organizations to provide greater opportunities for development and growth to women," concludes Madrid Guijarro.

Greater propensity to lockout

Wednesday is also read in the UPCT another thesis by a Latin American student.

Marina Altagracia Ortiz de Abreu has investigated more than twelve thousand Dominican microenterprises, analyzing the factors disappearance and the incidence of individual skills and levels of banking.

"The results suggest that women have a higher propensity to close their businesses than men, and that younger business and located in rural areas are more likely disappearance" summarizes the author of the thesis, directed by Garcia Perez de Lema.
