Declared a Cultural image of the Virgen del Rosell de Cartagena (24/02/2016)

The Governing Council has approved the decree that declared a Cultural (BIC) sculptural image of the Virgen del Rosell de Cartagena, at the request of the Parish Pastoral Council of the Parish of Santa Maria de Gracia of Cartagena.

His statement as BIC is justified by its outstanding cultural value based on its age and historical value, linked to the work of King Alfonso X the Wise and her title as patroness of the ancient Order of Santa Maria of Spain, that goes beyond the strictly regional .

It also constitutes one of the most interesting examples of medieval sculpture preserved scarce in the region, plus a singularity in the context of regional sculptural plastic.

These values are added intangible assets represented by the relevance of emotional ties established and maintained since medieval times by the people of Cartagena with the invocation of the Virgin of the Rosell, former patron of the city.

The carving of the Virgin del Rosell, from which it is known from the XIII century, currently chairs the high altar of the parish of Santa Maria de Gracia.

Its historical interest is remarkable, because in the Cantigas of King Alfonso X the Wise reference to this virgin is made, as well as the military order created by King Sabio in 1272, the Military Order of Santa Maria del Mar, also known as Lady of Spain or Order of the Star.

The latter name came from the symbolism of the star associated with the iconography of the Virgin, and the shield of the military order was a eight-pointed star within which the figure of the Virgin or quartered castles and lions are inscribed.

In addition, artwork Cantiga 78 of the Florentine Codex knights of the Military Order of Santa Maria del Mar, Spain or star is shown, dressed in tunic cut black and red cape with the emblem embroidered star .

Thus, Cartagena is set to head the maritime kingdom of Castile in the Mediterranean, as the seat of the Order of Santa Maria, grouped around the venerated image of the Virgen del Rosell.

These historical arguments retroactive dating to the thirteenth century image and link it to Alfonso X the Wise.

However, although the image corresponds to a type widely used from the Romanesque period, stylistically meets formal characteristics more typical of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, no one can rule out a little earlier chronology.

Former employer of Cartagena until the growing popular fervor around the image holder Charity Hospital he was relegated to the background, has always retained a special devotion to denote the strength of the emotional ties of the people of Cartagena with this picture Marian.

In dealing with the case they have issued a favorable report at the University of Murcia and Real Academia de Bellas Artes de Santa Maria de la Arrixaca.
