[A buoy with an underwater camera will broadcast the images of the funds of the Port of Cartagena in streaming for eight months (26/01/2021)

| The LoCo Buoy project, led by the UPCT, CORI, the CIFP Hespérides and the IES Politécnico Cartagena, will allow receiving and evaluating data such as the temperature or clarity of the waters | An underwater station with a low-cost buoy will be installed in the waters of the Port of Cartagena in the coming weeks thanks to the LoCo Buoy (Low Cost Buoy) project in which four academic and scientific research institutions participate; the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT), the Cartagena Oceanographic Research Institute (CORI), the CIFP Hespérides and the IES Politécnico Cartagena.  The main objective of this project is to have a measurement point in the sea that can record oceanographic parameters such as temperature or water clarity.

At the same time, this system will incorporate a submerged camera that will be broadcasting live and open 24 hours images of the seabed of the coastal area closest to the city of Cartagena since the infrastructure will be submerged in the facilities that the CIFP Hespérides has in El Espalmador.

The images can be viewed through platforms such as YouTube, with the Polytechnic University of Cartagena www.upct.es being in charge of managing these multimedia contents.  The Cartagena Oceanographic Research Institute (CORI) will be in charge of the most scientific part and the search for useful applications for citizens of the data extracted from these two instruments.

The maintenance and installation of the necessary devices for the anchoring will correspond to CIFP Hespérides while the electronic part will be handled by the Polytechnic Institute of Cartagena. The LoCo Buoy initiative will last for eight months and, in addition to generating valuable oceanographic material, it will meet other objectives such as promoting care and respect for the coastal area or the continuous dissemination of underwater life in images in.

This initiative has the collaboration of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology - Ministry of Science and Innovation.  Students from academic institutions participating in the LoCo Buoy project will be able to learn on site about the implementation of an underwater engineering project with the corresponding difficulties involved in deploying and maintaining this type of device in an environment as inhospitable as the marine environment.

Through this system, students will be able to put into value many of the theoretical knowledge acquired in their training in subjects such as electronics or the transmission and reception of data.  The LoCo Buoy project is part of the European initiative for sustainable blue growth, which aims to develop a type of exploitation of the oceans that ensures its continuity and guarantees a low impact on the environment.  function { ;(, , {});}
