The City Council increases the budget for the control and elimination of pests in the municipality by 40 percent (12/05/2020)

| Health and Decentralization devise a plan to tackle the disinsection work by the neighborhood councils | The Departments of Health and Decentralization have devised a disinsection plan throughout the municipality that will also involve the action of the neighborhood boards to tackle an extraordinary fumigation that will take place in the coming weeks.

To carry out these tasks, the City Council has increased the planned budget by 40%, adding two special plans that will be implemented both in neighborhoods and county councils, as well as in the wetlands of the Cartagena coast. Thus, from Health, an area headed by the deputy mayor, Manuel Padín, a special action plan has been drawn up against pests in the Marina del Carmolí, the Lo Poyo land and the Marchamalo salt flats, which will involve an investment of more than 50,000 euros , as a consequence of the current situation of the underground aquifer, which is saturated and has caused stagnations of water that did not exist until now. From the Department of Decentralization, led by Diego Ortega, an extraordinary contract will be developed aimed at actions focused on the urban centers of the deputations at the hands of the neighborhood boards that will be developed in the coming weeks in phases, as was already done in disinfections carried out on the occasion of the coronavirus. For the implementation of this second action, both councilors will hold a telematic meeting with those responsible for the meetings to coordinate the action plan and be able to develop it as soon as possible. These two initiatives will also lead to the concessionary company of the municipal disinsection service being able to focus its teams on actions in coastal towns and increase its presence in the city and in the peripheral neighborhoods."We have been working on the prevention of this situation since I assumed responsibilities in health in July last year," recalled the Deputy Mayor and Councilor for Health, stating that "actions in coastal areas have been constant throughout the year and, together with the cleaning of municipal plots and the requirements sent to individuals, the current situation has not been more serious ”.

However, for the mayor it remains a priority, as evidenced by the meetings held in recent weeks with the Autonomous Community and the thousand notifications that have been sent from his area to individuals to carry out the maintenance of their spaces.Likewise, the deputy mayor has thanked the collaboration of the Autonomous Community, through the General Directorate of Natural Environment, which has resulted in a detailed study of the Marchamalo salt flats to identify mosquito foci and act for their solution.

In addition, the regional department has given its approval to the municipal petition sent in February to carry out biological control treatments in all the protected areas of Cartagena, such as the Marina del Carmolí.

The local Executive also trusts in an immediate autonomic collaboration in the actions that are going to be carried out in the Calblanque natural park, one of the main centers of the municipality."We have not stopped for a second on this matter and whoever says otherwise is that he lives in another municipality or does not want to find out," explained the Councilor for Health, who recalled the work of cleaning municipal lots that began in February in The Urrutias and that were slowed by the health crisis.

In this sense, the mayor has reported that "as soon as the work can be resumed we will continue acting".Likewise, the deputy mayor has reiterated that "the collaboration of citizens is essential and, now, joint work with neighborhood councils will allow us to reach all corners of the municipality to ensure that mosquitoes do not become the new pandemic of Our city".A side and a specific campaign against the tiger mosquitoIn addition, the City Council is going to launch two more actions aimed at raising public awareness of mosquitoes, especially.

Thus, the Mayor's Office is going to dictate a side with the recommendations that must be followed to minimize the presence of these insects in private garden areas, as well as in community pools and reservoirs.

On the other hand, the concessionaire company will launch a specific campaign against the tiger mosquito with a triptych that includes measures to be taken by citizens at home and different councils.
