AFORCA proposes the signaling of the main military fortifications in Cartagena (09/11/2019)

The friends of the castles and fortresses of Cartagena present the drafting of various posters with information that completes the historical account of the main military fortifications of the immediate surroundings of the city that are frequently visited by a large number of hikers and hikers

The Association of Castles and Fortresses of Cartagena (AFORCA) has welcomed the news of the presentation of Cartagena as a candidate to obtain the UNESCO World Heritage designation.

To the proposals coming from other institutions, AFORCA joins the approach that this longed-for initiative must be preceded by a minimum of interest by the promoting institutions that confirm their commitment to the value of this rich heritage.

According to AFORCA estimates, the set of castles, forts and batteries of Cartagena are visited annually by more than 40,000 people, who hardly access them following the instructions of "word of mouth" since they are totally non-existent posters that guide and especially briefly explain the history and characteristics of these important fortifications.

We also think that this initiative, valued at around € 3,600, is totally affordable for the municipality and would make it more credible for citizens and associations that we support this declaration the commitment that Cartagena wants to acquire.

To this proposal, and in the absence of resources or economic initiatives that achieve the enhancement of this heritage, others such as the clearing and periodic cleaning of these fortifications should be added.

The proposal is composed of nine posters, with descriptive information about their project, construction, missions, history and artillery, accompanied by plans and historical photographs taken from the AFORCA archives and other publications of refuted fidelity such as the "Study and cataloging of the Cartagena and its bay defenses "by Aureliano Gómez Vizcaíno and David Munuera Navarro.

This signage would be placed on public roads on foot of the general accesses or in front of them, and would cover the following:

Christmas fort;

over the pedestrian zone of the Christmas Lighthouse.

Watchtower Castle;

in the access from Peroniño street.

Moors Castle;

in its access from Mompeán street.

Castle of San Julián;

in its access from the Paseo del Muelle (N-343).

San Leandro battery;

In front of it on the Paseo del Muelle (N-343).

Battery of San Isidoro and Santa Florentina;

in front of it at the San Fulgencio viewpoint.

Fort of Santa Ana;

in front of it at the San Fulgencio viewpoint.

Santa Ana Complementary Battery: in front of it at the San Fulgencio viewpoint.

Wall of Carlos III;

at the bottom of the stairs.

Finally, AFORCA reminds the incumbent institutions of compliance with the Heritage Law that establishes that a BIC can never declare itself in ruin, and insists them to at least inform the competent administration of the danger of loss in the That part of the heritage of fortifications and that is briefly summarized in its "Red List":

1. Covered road covered with entrance to the Battery of the Podadera (late S. XIX), whose construction is about to collapse over the sea.
