The Assembly requests the presence of a permanent unit of the EMU in Cartagena (14/10/2019)

The General and Institutional Affairs Committee of the European Union and of the Human Rights of the Assembly has unanimously approved an initiative of the Popular Parliamentary Group in which the constitution of a permanent contingent of the III Emergency Intervention Battalion is requested of the Military Emergency Unit (UME) in the municipality of Cartagena.

The parliamentary spokesman of the PP has highlighted "the operational capabilities of the EMU in interventions such as the fight against forest fires, earthquakes and floods", and more specifically recalled that "its troops have been determinants in different natural disasters that unfortunately we have suffered in the Region, such as the Terras de Lorca in 2011, the floods in Los Alcázares in 2016, the fires of the year 2018 or the recent floods caused by DANA. "

Segado has affirmed that "the EMU already has the admiration and affection of all Murcia, as they have shown on several occasions, which is a reason for more to promote through this Assembly the recognition and gratitude of the Region of Murcia for its solidarity and humanitarian work ".

"You just have to remember how the residents of Los Alcázares were fired after the floods," he said.

The "popular" spokesman explained that, at present, the III Battalion of the EMU existing in Bétera (Valencia), where 600 troops are destined, is the one that covers the Region of Murcia, hence "our proposal is that a detachment of troops linked to the Valencia battalion can be installed in Cartagena without dividing the force. "

For Joaquín Segado, the city of Cartagena "has enough military facilities to accommodate it and its presence would be positive, as it would reduce response times to deal with emergency situations. The idea is to cover the entire Region, and even to the province of Almeria ".

The Popular Party has also registered an initiative in which it asks the Government of Spain to grant the UME the Isabel la Católica Honor Tie, the highest distinction awarded to a collective institution.
