The Governing Board allows the investment of 400,000 euros in the Amphitheater (06/09/2019)

The Governing Board, chaired by the mayor, Ana Belén Castejón, today approved a budget modification in the amount of 45,000 euros, which together with the 55,000 euros already planned, allow to guarantee the 100,000 euros that the City Council must provide for the implementation of the 1.5% Cultural program that will address the recovery and enhancement of the second phase of the Roman Amphitheater.

The Ministry of Development agreed last March that the City Council of Cartagena would receive from the Cultural 1.5% program a subsidy of 75% of the total amount of the project for the recovery of phase 2 of the Roman Amphitheater, which will allow the intervention of the southern quadrant, between the current work and the Autopsy Pavilion, as well as the consolidation of the double ring wall of the Plaza de Toros.

"The budget modification approved today guarantees that we have the 100,000 euros that the City Council has to contribute to finally make this investment in one of the great jewels of our heritage," said Castejón.

This is not the only subsidy that the Amphitheater will receive, since the City Council recently signed an action protocol with the Ministry of Development, which will involve an injection of one million euros more for phases 3 and 4 of the works.

The recent findings in the southern minor axis of the Amphitheater, which have shown three perfectly preserved service rooms, called prisons, in which gladiators and animals were waiting to go out to fight in the arena, once again reveal the great value of this site , which added to the Forum and the Roman Theater "give Cartagena the great honor of being one of the most emblematic patrimonial jewels of the entire Mediterranean," said Castejón.
