An architect from UPCT designs a posidonia research center in San Pedro del Pinatar (02/08/2019)

The student of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) Virginia Ruiz Guillamón has planned to conclude the degree in Architecture a research and dissemination center of the oceanic posidonia in San Pedro del Pinatar, located in the regional park of Salinas and Arenales, together to buildings of the Captaincy of the port and the IMIDA research institute.

The student has investigated posidonia and has designed its center using the mathematical pattern that reproduces this endemic aquatic species as it expands and perishes.

“The inner courtyards of the buildings are an allegory of the lifeless spaces within the meadow, called fairy circles,†adds the student, who has also made a nod to the salt mountains on the roofs of the project, directed by Pedro García Martínez, professor of the Department of Architecture and Building Technology.

The building proposed by the student would expand the Posimed research program carried out by the Spanish Oceanographic Institute and also give space to the disclosure to “rediscover the uses and applications of posidonia, which was formerly used as a mattress padding or to feed animalsâ€, Virginia Ruiz explains.

Ruiz admits to having learned “very much that he didn't know about posidonia.

Research is an essential part of architectural work, â€says the architect by the UPCT.
