MC urges CARM to comply with the Law by opening the Roman Theater to public visits at least four days a month (29/07/2019)

Last Friday, during the Municipal Plenary session, the Government of the lash, formed by PSOE, PP and Ciudadanos again showed their great harmony regarding the contempt of the Law and the rights of the neighbors publicly declaring with their vote that they will persist in the breach of the regulations that require to facilitate for at least four days a month, the opening of the Roman Theater to allow its free public visit.

In this context, the Councilor of MC Cartagena, María Dolores Ruiz, recalled that "as head of the Roman Theater, not the Museum, it is up to the local government to comply with the Regional Law of Cultural Heritage, whose modified 2018 requires the opening of all BICs unless there is a total or partial waiver by the competent Ministry, which is based on causes that are sufficiently justified and accredited in an administrative procedure instructed to that effect. "

He then pointed out that "the regional disregard for Heritage is evident in the fact that, to this day, there is still no regulation that develops this Law, when it should be approved before December 31, 2018".

Subsequently, Ruiz has commented "the reasons given by the Government of the lash to oppose to approve our motion and, therefore, to comply with the law. They say that they are economic matters, since according to their exposure eight out of ten euros raised by the tickets are aimed at the maintenance of the Theater ".

Need to argue economic reasons

"For our part, we will continue to ensure compliance with the Law. And we stick to it by claiming that if, as it seems evident, the will of the Government team is to deny the opening, it is essential to seek from the Ministry the beginning of an administrative procedure to that effect to dispense, totally or partially, the City Council of this obligation ".

"You must clearly specify the circumstances that exclusively affect the Theater and not the Museum prevent public and free visit," he said.

For all the above, the mayor of Cartagena has concluded that his training "will request the Ministry of Culture, attached to the Roman Theater Foundation, the opening of this administrative event that includes a coherent study on the special circumstances of the Roman Theater of Cartagena that prevent their public and free visit and that specify the economic 'damages' that this would entail, damages that the Mosque of Cordoba, the Synagogue of the Transit in Toledo or the Cathedral of Granda do not suffer, to give some examples ".
