Two architectural competitions reward the student of the Polytechnic of Cartagena Eva Moreno (03/07/2019)

"Luckily, an awards ceremony was held in the morning and another in the afternoon," recalls the student of Architecture at the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) Eva Moreno Álvarez, who had to travel from Castellón to Madrid to pick up the same day, two awards for their innovative projects.

The first prize in the Steelcase competition for its magnetic solution to reconfigure comfort spaces and the second prize Matimex students for their design of homes in old tobacco dryers.

"In the career of Architecture, there is a lot of evolution", explains the Andalusian student of the UPCT, who has already accumulated six awards in architectural competitions.

The student has devised a magnetic system to move furniture and dividers, such as walls and walls, to adapt work or rest spaces to the circumstances.

"Electromagnetic coils and rails would be placed under the pavement and powerful magnets would be installed at the base of the furniture and dividers," explains Eva Moreno of her Magneto-Starttica project, awarded 3,000 euros in the ninth edition of the Steelcase company contest. specialized in workspaces.

"The electromagnet integrated under the pavement and powered by the electricity generated with the footsteps of the users would allow the adaptation and reorganization of the furniture available through a mobile device in which users can move with their finger the required furniture to the desired position ", Explains the student of the UPCT, who wants to develop the idea during his final project.

"It's especially useful for reconfiguring workspaces based on attendees," he adds.

The innovative idea has been taken out of the other career that is ending at the UPCT, Civil Engineering.

"I have adapted the technology of magnetic levitation trains to Architecture," he says.

In fact, the young woman, originally from Málaga, chose to study at the Polytechnic of Cartagena for the proximity of the schools of Architecture and Roads and the possibility of combining both passions to reinforce their multidisciplinary profile.

On the same day in which she was awarded by Steelcase, Eva Moreno also received the second prize of the PIAM competition for students of the Castellimean company of ceramic materials Matimex for its project of patrimonial recovery of abandoned tobacco dryers in the Vega de Granada.

Another student of the UPCT, Pablo Robles, already won the first prize of this contest in 2017.

"Their latticework provides a very comfortable interior," says the student, who has designed a group of homes inside a dozen drying rooms in El Chaparral, hamlet of Albolote, using self-cleaning ceramic materials.

The project is titled 'Second lives.

Re-inhabit the tradition 'and maintains the atmosphere of these agrarian infrastructures, located in the urban center of the population.
