"There are hotels that are offering rooms in AirBnB, you have to regulate the sector" (07/06/2019)

The EMOD's group of the Polytechnic has organized the Meeting of Applied Economics and has directed the special session on tourism

Hundred and a half experts and researchers in Applied Economics have analyzed between yesterday and today in the Faculty of Business Sciences of the UPCT different economic topics, from the world of finance to business innovation, through the geographical-spatial approach, which is specialized in the Economic Modeling and nonParametric Statistic group of the Polytechnic of Cartagena, which has supported the congress with the resources provided by the Seneca Foundation as a research group of excellence.

Teachers of the UPCT have also directed the special session on tourism that has been developed this morning, in which researchers from the universities of Oviedo and Murcia have presented studies on decision criteria to choose hotel and on the uneven evolution of tourism in Europe in in recent years, with an upturn in countries such as Croatia and Hungary.

In the same forum, a Nicaraguan doctoral candidate from the Polytechnic of Cartagena has advanced the results of his thesis on sustainable tourism in rural communities of his country, "in which tourism activity is a complement to local development and leads to the empowerment of the woman ", according to summarizes the director of the investigation, Andrés Artal.

In addition, the UPCT has also presented a work based on the application of big data techniques to detect how the AirBnB platform affects the hotel sector in Barcelona, where there is a special conflict between these tourist accommodations.

"We have seen that there is a lot of heterogeneity in the sector and it can not be generalized," says the researcher in charge, Mari Luz Maté.

"In certain neighborhoods the offer is complementary and does not compete directly with the hotel sector, but in others with a greater concentration of accommodation there is a substitute effect, harmful for hotels, especially in the case of owners of many homes", details the Professor of Business Sciences, indicating that there are people who have up to 70 accommodations offered in AirBnB.

The researchers conclude that "the sector needs regulation" so that there is no unfair competition and compliance with tax and labor regulations and indicate that traditional agents are already entering the new platforms.

"There are hotels that offer rooms in AirBnB," he says.

At the regional level, the data that has been announced at the congress certify that there are already more accommodation places available at AirBnB than at the hotels.

In the organization of the Encounter of Applied Economics, promoted annually by the Free Association of Economics (ALdE) and the Journal of Applied Economics (REA), fifteen students from the Faculty of Business Sciences have participated as volunteers.

"Starting in the organization of congresses is a very valuable experience, especially for the students of the degree in Tourism", highlight Artal and Maté, coordinators of the event.
