The acting mayor of Cartagena, Ana Belén Castejón, has decreed the start of the Municipal Honors and Distinctions file so that the auditorium located in the Park of Alfonso Torres bears the name of Francisco Martín Peñas, in memory and tribute of what was for more of three decades cultural programmer of the consistory and creator and director of La Mar de Músicas.

The announcement of the file to be resolved by the next Municipal Corporation, has been published today in the local press and on the bulletin board of the municipal website, so that people and entities that wish to do so can adhere to it for a period of one month. .

In this way the municipal government in office picks up the motion converted into a plea from the popular group, at the request of the Board of Spokespersons, so that the denomination of the audience can be released on the occasion of the next edition of La Mar de Músicas.

Fracisco Martín Peñas, to whom the Autonomous Community, will soon grant him the Gold Medal of the Region, passed away on August 14.

His death shocked the cultural world, not only local, but also regional and national, in which there were numerous expressions of condolence,

As stated by the decree of Mayor, "his is one of the proper names to which we must thank much of the cultural beat of the Region of Murcia: devoted his whole life to cultural management and the dissemination of music, dance and theater , standing at different times in front of projects such as the Cartagena Jazz Festival -which he created and directed since its inception 38 years ago-, the programming of the New Theater Circus, the "Other Music" section of the Regional Auditorium of Murcia, the Festival of Teatro de San Javier, the MuDanzas festival, Encounters with the New Dance. "

"He was also a prominent member of the Mestizo cultural association, with which in the 90s, together with Joaquín Cánovas and Paco Salinas, the cultural life of the Region of Murcia was revolutionized.

"

"Even with all of this, the project for which he was best known was the La Mar de Músicas festival, which he created together with José Luis Cegarra 24 years ago and which until the date of his death was responsible.

An exemplary festival in many aspects, which has not only managed to give the city national and international projection, but has done so with courageous programming, with a wide range of views, parity and out of the usual circuit;

in which they fit musics from all over the world and from all styles and that were always characterized by understanding culture in a broad and open way ".

"The months of July turned Cartagena into a celebration.

Music, good music, has played in the warm nights of Cartagena next to the Roman Theater, or the statue of Asdrúbal, founder of the city.

The party became a routine in a calendar that Paco Martín was winning step by step, when the region was a cultural wasteland.

"Child prodigy in the time of Joselito and Marisol, came to record an album with the star title" El barquito ".

He received the affectionate nickname of 'Little Nightingale of Cartagena'.

He even acted in Spanish Television at the invitation of Cesáreo González, at that time the most important producer in the country.

And he was about to record a movie in which Sara Montiel was going to be his mother.

Finally it was not realized since the producer died. "

"Before entering cultural management, Martín taught at the Los Salesianos school in Los Dolores."

"His commitment to the cultural world and to music in particular has always been present in his life.

He lived when he was young in Barcelona, where, together with a group of friends, he had a music group.

Back in Cartagena, also with some friends, he opened El Arlequín, a bar where jazz was programmed and exhibitions were held, which brought together Cartagena's progression.

Precisely there, was born the jazz festival that has completed 39 editions, the previous 38 directed by Martin ".

"For Cartagena, and thanks to the work of Paco Martín, have passed all the great jazz figures such as Art Blakey, Chet Baker, Diana Krall, Branford Marsalis, John McLaughlin, Dianne Reeves, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Pat Metheny, Chic Korea, Dizzy Gillespie, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Wynton Marsalis, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Tete Montoliu, McCoy Tyner, Michael Nyman, Archie Sheep, Ludovico Einaudi, Stéphane Grappelli ... or global music such as Omara Portuondo, Salif Keita, Youssou N'dour, Cesaria Evora, Ali Farka Toaré, Lucky Dube, Enrique Morente, Marisa Monte Gilberto Gil, Khaled, Compay Segundo, Susana Baca, Toto la Momposina, Miriam Makeba, Gino Paoli ... "

"Always discoverer, an advanced one, he knew how to perceive when an artist was going to be great.

Thanks to him, Cartagena has been the Spanish city that has been trodden for the first time by many artists such as Carlinhos Brown, Ismael Lô, Benjamin Clementine, Lhasa de Shela, Oumou Sangaré, Bomba Estereo or Adriana Calcanhotto. "

"Most of them have been developed in the Alfonso Torres Park Auditorium, which has been linked to the future of La Mar de Músicas.

It is enough to remember that this municipal installation, created in the early 70's of the last century, had periods of abandonment, until the arrival of La Mar de Músicas in 1995, which endowed it with a continued summer program contributing to its popularity, in such a way that nowadays are an inseparable binomial.
