The electoral results of April 1931 and an exhibition of Loza de Cartagena, document and video of the month in the Municipal Archive (20/05/2019)

The Municipal Archive of Cartagena has chosen as document of the month of May a manuscript that collects the electoral results of the elections held in the city on April 12, 1931. As video of the month, an audiovisual document has been selected on the exhibition 'Loza of Cartagena - José Angosto García-Vaso Collection.

With regard to the document of the month, the municipal elections of April 12, 1931 focuses on the unity of action between Republicans and Socialists, whose only agglutinating was the antimonarchical struggle, the vindication of the Republic.

The campaign in Cartagena took place amid an atmosphere of tranquility, reflected in the rallies of the Republican and left parties a fierce criticism of both the past errors of the monarchy and the traditional parties and in these a defense of the stability and public order against the supposed anarchy embodied in the Republic.

As in the rest of Spain, the campaign was presented as a pulse between the republicanism and the monarchy, product of a deep national division (still bloodless) existing in the 30s: rich and poor, left and right, monarchy or republic, etc. .

The elections were held according to the electoral law of 1909, which allowed men aged over 25 to vote.

In the municipality of Cartagena could participate, framed in districts, 25% of its inhabitants, a total of 26,290 electors who had to choose 45 councilors, one less than Murcia capital, among which, once constituted the corporation, they chose themselves Mayor.

There were 120 candidates: 30 were from the Republican-Socialist conjunction, 26 from the Conservative Party, 26 from the Cartagenerist or Uperista Party, 26 from the Romany, 9 from the Albino and 3 from the independent.

The republican and leftist parties, in electoral coalition, doubled the monarchists in votes and obtained 28 councilors, 18 republicans and ten socialists.

The monarchical right of different tendencies obtained 16 councilmen, 10 of them Cartagena, and there was an independent.

The video of the month chosen by the Municipal Archive of Cartagena speaks about the exhibition 'Loza de Cartagena - José Angosto García-Vaso Collection'.

In this exhibition, José Angosto García-Vaso, from Cartagena, exhibited a set of documents in order that the collective history of the people of Cartagena could not be lost.

He was present at the Municipal Archives of Cartagena from May to September 2010.
