Citizens describe as "unacceptable" the lack of information on the causes and consequences of the Repsol spill (02/05/2019)

"12 days after the event no responsible of the company has explained the causes of the overflow, and therefore, nobody can assure that something similar or even worse will not happen again with the next rains", denounces the spokesman of the liberal party in Cartagena, Manuel Padín

Ciudadanos considers "insufficient and alarming" the information that the City Council's technical services have offered today on the causes and effects of the spillage of oily hydrocarbons in the Escombreras rambla that occurred as a result of the heavy rains between the 19th and 20th of April.

"The report that has been given to us denies the information offered by the Ministry of the Environment because the pollutant spill did affect the port dock of Escombreras and the mouth, due to the delay in placing the containment barriers and the defective installation of one of them ", explains the liberal spokesman in Cartagena, Manuel Padín, who on the other hand considers that" twelve days after these events we still do not know if the causes of the overflow of the rainwater harvesting plant is due to human error, by a breakdown, or by a structural weakness, this means that if it rains again with the same intensity, more spills could occur, something that we find totally unacceptable. "

The Citizen spokesman denounces that "to date we do not even know the total volume of water discharged or the polluting load that in addition to hydrocarbons could drag other dangerous elements"

In light of the conclusions of the municipal technical report, Ciudadanos believes that everything points to the failure of the protocol of prevention and action, "despite having an exact precedent in 2015, the company has been unable to establish, before the clear forecasts of intense rains, the preventive devices that were required ", says Manuel Padín who considers" evident that the barriers were installed late and badly and that affected the mouth and the port dock but the most serious thing in my opinion is that twelve days after the event, no responsible person of the company has explained the causes of the overflow, and therefore, nobody can assure that something similar or even worse will not happen again with the next rains ".

The Liberal Party also believes that the information provided by the related entities, Repsol, Segura Hydrographic Confederation, Port Authority, General Directorate of Environment, and General Directorate of Energy and Industrial Activity, has been deficient, contradictory, late, "it has it has underestimated the event in a public way, which has been another hard blow to the confidence of the Cartagena public institutions, as happened with the damage at Repsol in June 2018 with the escape of steam, sulfur and hydrocarbons.

Reprograms to PSOE and PP

Citizens regrets that the PSOE has failed to convene a meeting in which representatives of the company Repsol and environmental groups are present, "this meeting has only served for our municipal technicians to confirm the lack of information and to make it clear that the main Competences related to the spill are autonomous. "

On the other hand, Cs believes that the absence of the PP at the meeting is a "other irresponsible contempt of the PP to the interests of Cartagena, would do well to forget a little of the election campaign, to discredit with arrogance to Citizens and other parties , go down to earth and worry a little about the real problems of the people of Cartagena ".
