Ecologists in Action denounces that only pollution recommendations in Cartagena are avoided with recommendations (08/03/2019)

Ecologists in Action before the activation of the anti-pollution protocol in the Valley of Escombreras and La Aljorra1 wants to denounce that only with the recommendations of the General Directorate of the Environment (use of public transport and avoid burning of stubble and carrying out earth movements, carved of cultivation zones) does not end with the PM 10 particle exceedances in the Escombreras Valley and La Aljorra.

On the contrary, short-term action plans are needed to allow me to adopt concrete measures to combat the deterioration of air quality.

A control plan for industrial emissions is necessary with an inspection program for industrial activities.

The decrease in the speed of road traffic, especially heavy road traffic, accessing these industrial zones and restrictions on access during a high level of pollution, as well as the prohibition of agricultural burning and earth movements when an increase in pollution is expected atmospheric

Ecologists in Action is quite concerned about the inaction and passivity of the regional and local public authorities in the face of the repeated episodes of air pollution every year.

Unfortunately episodes of deterioration of air quality will continue to occur in the near future.

In addition, Ecologists in Action claims that only PM2.5 particles are measured in the Mompean station, and claim that these particles are measured in all stations of the atmospheric surveillance network in the Campo de Cartagena and public information is provided in time real.

The environmental organization calls for significant improvement of public transport during these episodes with increased frequency and buses punctually and a permanent public information campaign to discourage the use of private vehicles.

It is necessary, during periods of pollution, restrictions on the circulation of vehicles applied on days of high pollution, and reducing the speed of a stable way to 30 kilometers per hour, in the center of the city.

There is also a need for an in-depth reform of the Air Quality Improvement Plan prepared by the regional government which, up to now, has not been shown as a useful and effective instrument to fight against episodes of air pollution that, year after year, Suffer your region.

The deterioration of air quality due to air pollution by particles was responsible in 2015 for almost 28,000 premature deaths in Spain, according to the latest report on air quality published by the European Environment Agency, citing studies by the World Health Organization. Health (WHO).

The Carlos III Health Institute has estimated almost 3,000 premature annual deaths caused by short-term exposure to particles in the twenty Spanish cities where a significant association between contamination and mortality has been found.

1 On March 6, 83 micrograms per cubic meter were measured at the La Aljorra station and 51 micrograms / m3, above the limit value of the state regulation on air quality, which is 50 micrograms / m3.
