The City Council keeps the amount of 200 thousand euros in the'cheque' to the Processions (06/03/2019)

The processions have permission to go out into the street, once they have complied with the tradition, on this Ash Wednesday, to celebrate the Holy Week Call, an event in which, each year, the Brotherhoods announce to the mayor their decision to take the processions to the street and the municipal authority expresses their approval and gives the traditional "check" containing the direct subsidy granted for it to the Board of Guilds.

A check that this year amounts to 200,000 euros, the same amount as last year, although the mayor, Ana Belén Castejón, has announced that, 'exceptionally, the delivery of this subsidy is not exempt from another possible contribution'.

The event that gives the starting signal to the processions in Cartagena, began about 7 in the afternoon, with the meeting, in the headquarters of the different guilds, of their general councils, to then go together, to the sones from a charanga, to the Consistorial Palace, where the members of the Board of Brotherhoods, accompanied by the Major Nazarene, María Consolación Pavía Galán;

the preacher, Tomás Martínez Pagán, and the processionist of the year, Rafael Ruiz Manteca, have been received by the mayor, Ana Belén Castejón, and the members of the municipal Corporation.

After the intervention, in the first place, of the president of the Board of Brotherhoods, a position currently held by the elder brother Marrajo, Francisco Pagán, who has communicated the decision to take the processions to the street, the mayor took the floor. during his speech, he highlighted the 'brotherhood' that reigns in Cartagenera Holy Week, in each and every one of its processions, from the first one, that of Socorro, passing through the transfers, and those of the Cofradías California, Marraja, until the procession that closes the week, that of the Risen One.

A brotherhood that, according to Ana Belén Castejón, 'is an example and we must continue cultivating'.

Once the amount of the check is revealed and faithfully complying with the tradition, the mayor announced to the people of Cartagena that "this year there are processions, music and the street."

And with sounds of the best known and popular Holy Week marches have been directed to the Church of Charity where the traditional Mass and offering to the Patron Saint took place.
