The restoration of the Forum and the connection paths in the deposit, new projects for the Windlass (01/03/2019)

El Molinete has two new projects: the restoration of the Roman Forum and the connection paths in the site.

To the performances of the last years in the Archaeological Park of the Molinete comes to add a new intervention, the "Basic project and execution of architectural, archaeological, restoration and conditioning of sector 4: forum and paths.

The Windlass ".

The mayor of Cartagena, Ana Belén Castejón, has presented these works.

He was accompanied by the Councilor for Culture, David Martínez, the Minister of Tourism and Culture of the Region of Murcia, Miriam Guardiola, the Director of Institutional Relations of the Repsol Foundation, Gonzalo Vázquez, and the Project Commissioner José Miguel Noguera.

This is the recovery of the Colonial Forum area, the most important public space of the old Carthago Nova whose excavation has already been completed and which has allowed interesting data on the configuration of this space and its adjacent buildings.

Now comes the moment of its musealization that will try to evoke how this space of the Roman city was.

Once recovered, you can walk through the streets that gave access to the forum;

visit the Curia building where local senators met;

and walk through the forensic plaza knowing firsthand the monumental Altar that was built there and the surrounding buildings, such as the Mosaic Building.

"We wanted to put the area of the Acropolis Park on the top of the hill, as well as the Termas del Puerto, the Atrium Building or the Isis sanctuary," affirms the Mayoress of Cartagena, Ana Belén Castejón, who says that it has already acted in 60% of the archaeological area of the Molinete, after ten years of intervention in the area.

The first mayor of Cartagena has said that it continues these works of recovery of historical and archaeological heritage of the city with "passion and love."

"It is a project that makes those who were in love fall in love with those who were there and those who will be in the next legislatures," says the mayor of the city Ana Belén Castejón.

The other part of this project is the mapping of the connecting paths between the future Roman Forum Museum and the areas already open to the public of the thermal baths, the Atrium Building and the Isis Sanctuary.

This architectural performance, made with reversible materials, will have a fountain and a rest area protected from the sun, in order to make the visit of the park comfortable and attractive.

With this action, the route of this great site will be reversed, visitors to the park will access the museum, from there they will go to the Forum, then to the sanctuary of Isis and finally to the banquet building and the hot springs, leaving to Honda Street, through the place that today is the access to the archaeological remains.

The forecast of duration for the execution of work of this project is 6 months with an amount of 368,820.37 euros (VAT not included).

The presentation of this project has preceded a visit to the execution of the works of the future Museum of the Roman Forum, where you can know the progress of the same in the building, as well as the rehabilitation and refurbishment of the Curia building 1st century AD During the visit to the future museum of the Roman Forum neighborhood, the mayor asked about the future location of Augustus, a complete statue of about two meters high from the 1st century that represents an image of Emperor Augustus, dressed as a sumo priest, and that was found in the excavations of the Molinete in 2002. In the future Museum has reserved a space to host this impressive statue that is eventually found in the Museum of the Roman Theater.

We must remember that all these works and those carried out in the last decade, promoted by the City Council and managed by Cartagena Port of Cultures, have had the collaboration of the regional government and the extraordinary financial support of Repsol and its Foundation, which has allowed to inaugurate the Sanctuary of Isis in 2017, and undertake a series of actions aimed at erecting the future Roman Forum Museum and recovering the Roman forum and curia.
