Cartagena becomes Baroque with the music of Bach (27/02/2019)

For the fourth consecutive year, Cartagena will experience the Bach Week Cartagena: a cycle of activities that revolve around the figure of Johann Sebastian Bach, coinciding with the European Day of Early Music.

The event will be held from Friday 15 to Thursday 21 March and is organized by the Department of Culture of the City of Cartagena and the Early Music Project platform, with the collaboration of other institutions.

The initiative, which seeks to bring Bach music to society, was presented on Wednesday, February 27, by the Councilor for Culture, David Martínez, the vice-rector of the UPCT, Mathieu Kessler, the manager of the Early Music Project , Jorge Losana, the coordinator of culture of the University of Murcia, Francisco Caballero, the director of ISEN Cartagena, Luis Cruz, the president of the Youth Symphony Orchestra of Cartagena, Álvaro Valdesuerio, and the choir director of the Elcano Institute and Iuvenis Musica, Baltasar Sánchez.

"Bach Cartagena is imbued by that spirit that animates this celebration that is none other than to reach the largest number of citizens this immense cultural-musical heritage of more than a millennium, from the Middle Ages to the eighteenth century" noted the councilor of Culture, David Martínez.

The Participatory Cantata is once again the key activity of this project linked to the European Day of Ancient Music.

That day is celebrated throughout Europe, since 2013, coinciding with the beginning of Spring and the anniversary of the birth of Johann Sebastian Bach, born on March 21, 1685, according to the Julian calendar.

This activity will be held on March 21, at 8:30 p.m., at the Church of Charity.

The theme chosen for this concert will be within 'Membra Jesu Nostri', by Dietrich Buxtehude, the cantatas 'Ad Pedes' and 'Ad Latus'.

According to the manager of Early Music Project, Jorge Losana, this German-Danish author has been chosen because "he was the organ teacher of Johann Sebastian Bach himself".

The Bach cantata BWV 140 'Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme' will also be performed.

This work is a cycle of seven cantatas dedicated to a part of the crucified body of Jesus Christ.

It is believed to be based on the poems of two Cistercian authors, St. Bernard of Clairvaux and Arnulph of Louvain.

The cantata of Bach is of ecclesiastical theme, written in Leizpzig, for the twenty-seventh Sunday after the Trinity (first Sunday after Pentecost) and released on November 25, 1731.

The inaugural concert of Bach Week Cartagena will take place on Friday, March 15, at the Regional Assembly, for the first time, at 7:00 pm, where the group L'Apothéose will perform works by Häendel, Stamich and a Bach musical offering.

On Saturday, March 16, the youth of the Symphony Orchestra of Cartagena will offer a Chamber Concert, conducted by Victor Martinez, in the hall of the Town Hall, at 8:30 p.m.

The president of the Youth Symphony Orchestra of Cartagena, Alvaro Valdesuerio, has qualified that "a string quartet will play Hayden, while a quintet will play Boccherini".

On March 19, 'Bach en la calle' will take place, where musicians from the Music Orchestra of the University of Murcia will perform baroque works in Plaza Icue, from 10:30 am to 1:30 pm.

One of the interpreters will be the cellist Pedro Ángel Aliaga, who has interpreted this morning, during the press conference, the Suite Nº1 of the Baroque master.

In relation to the didactic concerts (March 20-21) that will be held in the schools of Alumbres and Gabriela Mistral, in the Alfonso Carrión Library in Pozo Estrecho and in the Doña Cetenito Library, the musicians of the Orquesta de Música de The University of Murcia will talk with the youngest ones and with the assistants about two baroque instruments: the metal flute and the wooden traverse.

The call to attend and participate in the event opens from today through the web www.bachcartagena.com.
