The City of Cartagena launches two citizen campaigns to improve recycling and eliminate the inconvenience of canine urination (26/02/2019)

The City of Cartagena together with Ecoembes and Lhicarsa have presented today, February 26, two initiatives aimed at promoting citizen participation and cooperation in order to promote the recycling of packaging in the city, as well as for greater cleanliness of the roads with regarding pet depositions.

The Councilor of Public Services, Juan Pedro Torralba, has appeared this morning with Alberto Fernández Santa María, Manager of Local and Regional Management of Ecoembes, and the manager of Lhicarsa, Fernando de Mateo Luengo, to give details about these actions.

NEW YELLOW AND BLUE PAPER STATIONERY

The first of the measures seeks to promote the selective collection of plastic containers, cans and briks, and paper and cardboard containers in the city.

To do this, as explained by the council, the City of Cartagena, in collaboration with Ecoembes, will distribute 500 yellow and 500 blue bins, which will be delivered to all associations of the municipality to install them in their corresponding premises.

Among the associations that will participate in this recycling project, are associations of neighbors, women, youth, mothers and fathers of students, seniors, people with disabilities and other entities.

Torralba has indicated that this action is expected to "enhance the awareness of the public and increase the recycling of packaging, since much of the packaging is consumed outside the home."

He has also called attention to the involvement of the City Council with Ecoembes to promote respect for the environment, promoting the circular economy because "recycling contributes not only to take advantage of resources, but also to reduce the tons of CO2 emitted into the atmosphere , as well as saving water and energy necessary to create new products ".

The data of recycling during 2018 in the municipality of Cartagena, show very positive balances that reflect the increase of citizen awareness with respect to 2017.

Thus, plastic containers, cans and bricks were collected 2,577 tons, equivalent to 11.97 kg / inhabitant, which represents an increase of 6.8% over 2017.

Of paper and cardboard collected 2,807 tons, equivalent to 13.11 kg / inhabitant, with an increase of 9.9% over the previous year.

But the most spectacular increase occurred in the collection of paper and cardboard in shops: 190 tons, with a rise of 28.3% compared to 2017.

BOTTLES FOR CANINE MICTIONS

The second initiative will be launched by the City Council in collaboration with Lhicarsa.

As noted by Councilman Juan Pedro Torralba, through it the consistory and the concessionaire of the garbage collection and road cleaning service will give away 5,000 bottles that will help dissolve the urine of dogs on public roads, thus avoiding unpleasant smell and corrosion.

These are bottles of less than half a liter capacity, in total, 400 ml capacity, flexible body and a carabiner to hang on the strap.

Its use is very simple: you just have to fill the bottle with tap water and apply to the urination of the canine.

The mayor has indicated that this campaign aims to "get the collaboration of the owners of dogs to keep our city clean."

The places of free collection of these bottles will be the Municipal Offices of Information Administrative Processing (OMITAS), the Administrative Building of San Miguel and the Center of Attention and Treatment of Domestic Animals (CATAD), in La Asomada.
