The music bands of the Region generate an economic impact of 5.76 million euros in the last year (16/01/2019)

The total impact on the regional economy generated by the bands of the Region of Murcia amounts to 5.76 million euros.

This amount implies 105.4 full-time equivalent jobs.

This is confirmed by a study on the economic and sociocultural impact of the bands associated with the Federation of Music Bands of the Region of Murcia (FBMRM) made by researchers from the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT).

The report raises the need to recognize and accredit musical training in the Music Bands of the Region and to support its declaration as an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC).

The 50 bands of music in the Region of Murcia constitute a social body of more than 29,000 people.

All of them are non-profit associations.

They are formed by about 5,000 musicians among incumbents, juveniles and children.

They have about 8,000 students and more than 320 teachers.

The income of the bands of the Region reached 3.84 million euros in 2017. The expenses were 3.47 million euros, according to the study, carried out by a multidisciplinary group, with researchers from Economy and Quantitative.

36.7% of the income of music companies comes from tuition and payments for training.

29.1% comes from agreements or subsidies with the municipalities.

However, other agreements or grants with the CARM or others, represent only 3.9% of the total income of musical societies.

Regarding expenses, 71.2% of the 3.47 million euros mentioned were allocated to personnel, including payments to Social Security.

The salaries of professors stand out, which represent 63.3% of the total expenses of the bands, this is 1.8 million euros.

The purchase and rental of instruments and scores by the bands exceeds 120,000 euros per year, which represents 3.4% of total expenses.

Training

The music bands of the Region give on average about 125 hours of musical training per week.

185,000 hours a year, according to the study.

Between tests of titular bands and of young people another 10,500 annual hours were reached.

The study maintains that the exploitation of this cultural and patrimonial resource is a basic future sector to promote a sustainable tourism and leisure strategy.

It is also capable of providing added value to the population. In 2017, they participated in 478 processions, 272 parades, offered 467 band concerts and 57 orchestra concerts.

The researchers warn of the need to "adopt urgent measures, given the current situation of uncertainty and fragility that characterizes the sector in the face of recent regulatory changes at the regional level", says the researcher in charge, Juan Jesús Bernal, professor of Quantitative Methods of the UPCT.

The researchers highlight the contribution to the social connection of different groups.

They point out the need to make visible and value the educational, cultural, socializing and professional projection work carried out by the Music Bands and the regional federation.

"Both in the promotion of the individual, their personal abilities and their social integration, their contribution to local and regional culture and socio-cultural heritage, their ability to generate economic impact", adds Ginesa Zamora, president of the Federation of Music Bands of the Region of Murcia.

For his part, Alejandro Díaz, rector of the UPCT, today highlighted, during the presentation of the study, the important contribution of the Musical Groups to the musical culture, protecting, spreading, fomenting and promoting the musical and artistic tradition, and they have carried out over more than 100 years, conforming at the same time an associative fact integrating and cohesive of society.

In this study, directed by Juan Jesús Bernal, it has been done during 2018 by Andrés Artal, Antonio García, Mar Vázquez, David Siles, Pablo Pérez and Mª Victoria García.

One of the main objectives of the work is to make visible and value the educational, cultural, socializing and professional projection work carried out by the Music Bands and the regional federation itself.
