THE SATURNALS

Saturnalia was celebrated in honor of Saturn, god of agriculture.

They began on December 17 with a festive public feast (lectisternium) and, at the multitudinous cry of 'Io, Saturnalia', candles were lit (cerei) to celebrate the end of the darkest period of the year and the birth of the new period of light.

These Roman holidays were celebrated with large banquets and it was traditional to make gifts such as candles, clay figurines, bags with nuts or even money.

The typical dessert that was eaten during these holidays were the buns with honey, inside it was hidden a 'bean'.

The lucky one who had the 'bean' in his cup was crowned as 'Princeps Saturnalicius', and the others had to obey his orders.
