Fifteen technological ideas to fight against gender violence (21/11/2018)

Developing technological ideas that can be applied in the fight against violence against women has been one of the objectives of the I Competition of Technological Ideas for Gender Equality, held today at the School of Telecommunications Engineering of the UPCT.

The contest, held on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on November 25, has presented 15 proposals, made by young people from various educational centers in the Region of Murcia and the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) ).

With this contest, the UPCT aims to promote ideas and technological concepts in the field of Telecommunications Engineering that serve as a tool to prevent and combat violence against women, as well as to promote gender equality.

For José Víctor Rodríguez, deputy director of the Teleco School and one of the promoters of this initiative, "it has been a pleasant surprise the good reception of the activity since they have come works of boys and girls of different ages, including boys and girls of primary school for whom this will be their first contact with something as important as the struggle for equality between people ».

Rodriguez adds that although the goal of the contest is to develop technological ideas that can be applied in the fight against violence against women, what has been achieved in terms of visibility of this social problem and awareness before it meets the basic purpose of the project .

"We know that, thanks to this I Competition of Technological Ideas for Gender Equality, participants have addressed the defense of Equality in their classrooms, which greatly helps to raise awareness among young people on this issue and end up assuming equality as a normality ».

Telecommunications Engineering is currently applied in instrumentation that supports women who suffer male violence and helps others to avoid it.

Thus, this engineering is present in mobile applications that draw risk maps and indicate to women which routes to take to feel more safe walking down the street, or report through geolocation where men are found condemned for abuse and have some restraining order towards his victim.
