Cartagena Thinks out the concept of Erotic Capital to debate (19/11/2018)

The Cartagena Piensa program of the Department of Culture, proposed for Wednesday November 21 a debate with the sociologist Marcos Alonso Bote, around the concept of Erotic Capital.

What exactly is erotic capital and how is it managed?

How does it intervene in personal relationships?

These and other questions are those raised by the Boat, Professor of Sociology at the University of Murcia and which in turn will try to answer.

It will start at 8:00 pm at the Josefina Soria Library of the Ramón Alonso Luzzy Cultural Center, with free admission until full capacity is reached.

In the talk-colloquium: 'Atuendo para una campanadas: Debates about the erotic capital', Marcos Alonso Bote will review this concept, which was proposed by the British sociologist Catherine Hakim seven years ago in her Honey Money publication: The power of Erotic Capital.

This publication stirred the debate around the body and sexuality of women and in it the author adds to the four traditional dimensions identified by Pierre Bourdieu (Cultural, Social, Symbolic and economic) a fifth form, the Erotic Capital.

It would be a dimension that in the case of being owned could enhance the rest of the dimensions of capital.

The author insists on the potential of this dimension in the case of women attending to what is convenient to call sexual deficit, ie, a greater interest of men in sex and sexual relations than in the case of women.

In the session, the aim is to explore arguments for and against the concept of Erotic Capital and its application and the possible consequences for gender equality.

Marcos Alonso Bote Díaz holds a degree in Political Science and Sociology from the University of Granada and a PhD in Sociology from the University of Murcia.

Currently he is a Contracted Doctor Professor in the Department of Sociology and Social Work of the University of Murcia.

He has been a postdoctoral fellow abroad at the Universities of Surrey (Marie Curie-United Kingdom Program), Portland State University (CajaMadrid Postdoctoral Program, Oregon, United States) and UCLA (Mec-Fulbright Program, California, United States).

He has published, among others, in international journals such as: Social Science and Medicine and Sociological Research Online.

The speaker will be presented by Cristina Guirao Marín, sociologist.

This event is organized with the collaboration of the Department of Sociology of the University of Murcia.
